And reveal to me the fetter of my freedom.
And free me from the shackles that confine

He manifests in the dazzling face.
Radiant with His beauty so sincere
للعشاقfor the lovers فيin حكمُهْhis rule قاهرoverpowering
للعشاق في حكمُهْ قاهر
ياO ساقيcupbearer آهah ياO ساقيcupbearer
يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
In his rule, he overpowers lovers.
To lovers, His decree is severe

أستارُهْhis veils راحتhave gone
أستارُهْ راحت
عنfrom عينيmy eye والزهرَهْand the flower فاحتreleased fragrance
عن عيني والزهرَهْ فاحت
His veils have gone
His veils are lifted now
From my eye, and the flower has released its fragrance.
My eyes behold His brilliant brow
والسَكْرَهْand intoxication بالأسرارof the secrets باحتspoke openly
والسَكْرَهْ بالأسرار باحت
ياO ساقيcupbearer آهah ياO ساقيcupbearer
يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
And intoxication has divulged the secrets.
In mysteries, my heart knows how
O cupbearer, ah, O cupbearer!

اكشفunveil ليto me عنَّكْabout yourself
اكشف لي عنَّكْ
فيin ذاتيmy being وافتحand open ليfor me دِنَّكْyour wine jar
في ذاتي وافتح لي دِنَّكْ
Unveil yourself to me
Reveal Yourself in me
In my being, and open your wine jar for me.
Unlock for me Your sanctuary
واجعلنيand make me ياO حبيmy love منَّكْof you
واجعلني يا حبي منَّكْ

Let me hear sweet melodies capture
وارشفنيand give me a sip منfrom كاسيmy cup الملئانfull
وارشفني من كاسي الملئان

يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
And let me sip from my full cup.
From my filled cup let me savor

فيin دورthe round الكاساتthe cups
في دور الكاسات
قدalready غابتvanished إخوانيmy brothers الساداتthe masters
قد غابت إخواني السادات
As the cups go round,
In circles of cups
My brothers, the masters, have already vanished.
My noble friends are no longer here
والخمارْand the vintner محمودْpraiseworthy العاداتthe habits
والخمارْ محمودْ العادات
ياO ساقيcupbearer آهah ياO ساقيcupbearer
يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
And the vintner's ways are praiseworthy.
Wine's custom we hold dear
O cupbearer, ah, O cupbearer!
O Cupbearer, ah O Cupbearer
منwhoever يشربdrinks يسكرbecomes drunk
من يشرب يسكر
منfrom خمريmy wine لماwhen يتفكرhe contemplates
من خمري لما يتفكر
Whoever drinks becomes drunk
Those who drink will be drunk
On my wine, when he contemplates.
On my wine, in deep thought sunken
والمغرورand the deluded one فيin علمُهْhis knowledge أنكرhas denied
والمغرور في علمُهْ أنكر
ياO ساقيcupbearer آهah ياO ساقيcupbearer
يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
And the one deluded by his knowledge has denied it.
The arrogant in his knowledge, mistaken
O cupbearer, ah, O cupbearer!
O Cupbearer, ah O Cupbearer
العالمthe world فانيpassing away
العالم فاني
والموجودand the Existent ماnot لُهْhe has منany ثانيsecond
والموجود ما لُهْ من ثاني
The world is passing away.
The world is fleeting
And the Existent has no second.
What exists has no repeating
لاnot يدريknows غيرother than الربانيthe godly one
لا يدري غير الرباني
ياO ساقيcupbearer آهah ياO ساقيcupbearer
يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
None but the godly one knows.
None knows but the Omniscient Being
O cupbearer, ah, O cupbearer!

ياO دائمEternal One ياO هُوْHe
يا دائم يا هُوْ
إنindeed الكلall فيin أمركyour affair تاهوare bewildered
إن الكل في أمرك تاهو
O Eternal One, O He!

Indeed, all are bewildered by your affair.
All are confused by Your action
والمضنيand the weary one حبكْyour love أفناهُhas annihilated him
والمضني حبكْ أفناهُ
ياO ساقيcupbearer آهah ياO ساقيcupbearer
يا ساقي آه يا ساقي
And the weary one—your love has annihilated him.
Your love brought me annihilation

His entrails are scorched in my embers.
Their beings pray in my glowing grate

صبريmy patience فيin حبِّيهِmy love for him قدalready زالْhas vanished
صبري في حبِّيهِ قد زالْ
Desist, O reproachers!
Stop, O tormentors
My patience in loving him has already vanished.
My patience in His love now wavers
يغزونيhe assails me بالجفنwith the eyelid الغزّالflirtatious
يغزوني بالجفن الغزّال

He assails me with his flirtatious eyelid.
With the gaze of a tender-eyed gazelle, He ravishes

For the Meccan caravan departing in the morning,
Of pilgrims on the Meccan way

أو لاحت أنور الوادي

Or the lights of the valley gleam.
Or the lights of the valley in bright array
