حاولتُ في المرآة أنظرُ مَن أنا

فرأيتُ شخصاً أنكرتْهُ عيوني

I tried to look in the mirror, to see who I am

I saw a person whose eyes did not recognize

مستبشعَ الشدقينِ مندلقَ اللحَى

غلب البياضُ على السواد الجون

With sagging cheeks and dripping beard

Whiteness has overcome the blackness of complexion

يعلو القذى أجفانَه ولعابَه

مع ماء منخره وماء جفون

Dirt covers his eyelids and saliva

With the water of his nostrils and the water of his eyelids

لا ثغر في فمه وعن أسنانه

متعوِّضٌ بالدردر المسنون

No mouth opening, and his teeth

Replaced with artificial teeth

عيناه غائرتان في أصداغه

وجبينه في صفرة وكمون

His eyes sunk into his temples

And his forehead yellow and suppressed

فسألته من أنت قال أنا الذي

هو أنت بُدِّلَ عقله بجنون

So I asked him who are you, he said I am the one

Who is you, his mind replaced with madness

ذهبت شبيبته ورونق وجهه

والضعف لازمه وفرط الهون

His youth is gone, and the grace of his face

And weakness stuck with him and extreme submissiveness

عبد ولكن ربُّهُ بَرٌّ به

وعطاؤه كحياً عليه هتون

A slave, but his Lord is righteous to him

And his gifts to him are coiled over him

ما إن له عمل سوى توحيده

وسوى الرجاء لكافه والنون

He has no work but his oneness

And hope in “Kaf” and “Noon”

يمشي ويعثر في معالم ذنبه

مشيَ المكبلِ في قيود ديون

He walks and stumbles in the landmarks of his sin

The walk of the shackled in the chains of debts

ألف التجلي من صفات إلهه

وظهوره يرمي به لبطون

He has gotten used to the manifestation of his God’s attributes

And its appearance throws him into abdomens

نودي عليه ولات حينَ البيعِ مَنْ

يَشري له عبداً بدون الدون

He was called out when slaves were being sold, who

Would buy a slave for no money

فتضاحكت منه الرجال وأعرضوا

عنه وقالوا العبد عبد مجون

So the men laughed at him and turned away

From him and said the slave is a crazy slave

جم العيوب وما له غير الفنا

ستراً يلوذ بسره المكنون

He has gathered flaws and has nothing but extinction

As a cover to take refuge in his hidden secret

فأجبته قف وانتظر فلربما

جبر المسعِّرُ صفقةَ المغبون

So I told him: stand still and wait for perhaps

The Creator will fix the deal of the cheated
