لماwhen انثنتbent ثاءthe letter thāʾ الثناpraise الموروثinherited
لما انثنت ثاء الثنا الموروث
هيit كالفراشlike moths هنالكthere المبثوثscattered
هي كالفراش هنالك المبثوث
When the thāʾ of inherited praise bent,
It was there like scattered moths.
وبهاand through it تألفfound harmony كلevery معنىmeaning نافرestranged
وبها تألف كل معنى نافر
كجنودlike troops حربwar هاجمonrushing وبعوثand dispatched forces
كجنود حرب هاجم وبعوث
And through it every estranged meaning found harmony,
Like troops in an onrushing war and forces sent forth.
ياO أيهاyou الحرفthe letter الإمامthe leader المقتدىfollowed as an example
يا أيها الحرف الإمام المقتدى
لكyours is طيبsweetness أنفاسbreaths وفتكand deadly force ليوثlions
لك طيب أنفاس وفتك ليوث
O letter, the leader to be followed,
Yours are sweet breaths and the deadly force of lions.
ملكan angel كهاتيكlike those الحروفletters مقدسsanctified
ملك كهاتيك الحروف مقدس
فيin هيكلthe temple of الناموسthe mosquito والباغوثand the flea
في هيكل الناموس والباغوث
An angel, sanctified like those letters,
Within the temple of the mosquito and the flea.
ولأجلand because of هذاthis جاءناcame to us عنagainst سبهreviling it
ولأجل هذا جاءنا عن سبه
نهيthe prohibition of النبيthe Prophet بعلمهthrough his knowledge الموروثinherited
نهي النبي بعلمه الموروث
And for this reason there came to us, against reviling it,
The Prophet’s prohibition, through the knowledge inherited from him.
لكنهbut it فيin عينthe sight of منطلقunfettered الحجاreason
لكنه في عين منطلق الحجا
عبدa servant of المهيمنthe Guardian ليسis not عبدa servant of يغوثYaghūth
عبد المهيمن ليس عبد يغوث
Yet in the eyes of one whose reason is unfettered,
It is a servant of the Guardian, not a servant of Yaghūth.
