There is nothing but God, and things

are nonexistent—an act of Him who wills.

And an act is a thing without existence; it has no

manifestation apart from the One who performs it.

So God is manifest to them through His act,

while the act is nonexistent; concealment is its lot.

And the Real is the source; through His knowledge He appeared,

and all created things are His shadows.

    له إلى شاخصه انتماء

    And a shadow has no existence, yet is visible;

it belongs to the object that casts it.

And the shadow-caster is eternal knowledge; behind it

are the light and radiance of the Essence’s existence.

He said, “Have you not considered your Lord, how—”

He said, “He extended the shadow,” when they came.

And He, our Lord, encompasses all that is

in the universe, and He is the Benefactor, the Bountiful Giver.

And the hadith speaks of seven whom He shades

in His shade; it is a covering for them.

And that is on the day He appears to them:

no shade but His shade, willed by Him.
