I give my drinking companions drink from my cup, and drink what

They left me in the cup of my remaining wine.

So I was the last of them to drink, and the first

To grow drunk on what they left of the cupbearer’s splendor.

    فحققوا القول يا قومي وأرفاقي

    “What remains from God is better,” our Creator said;

So affirm these words, O my people and companions.

And this is the hand of the one I love, and it is my hand.

By touching it, my whole being received my Creator’s covenant.

Tell whoever refused my gathering and turned away:

Who will shield you in the hereafter from the Protector?

This is the wine, and this cup is full

Of wine up to the edges of my neck-rings.

You ascend, then fall from your highest station into

The depths of your ignorance of me—alas for the climber!

A thirsty man carries water in his waterskin,

Yet knows nothing of it, through bad character.

Indeed, the noble have drunk through their trust,

And your mistrust deprives you of the shimmering wine.

You are bound to shut the door that was opened

By God’s hand, and so remain outside the archway.
