If you seek to know the states,

And the state I am in at present,

And what I witness of myself,

    Always, whether settled or traveling,

And what my soul speaks to me

    About, at length and briefly—

    I—my essence and attributes—and likewise

    All sayings and deeds,

    Of worship and disobedience,

And permitted acts that are sanctioned,

    And firmly established beliefs,

And whatever comes into my mind,

Of knowledge of religion and this world,

At life's dawn and in its evenings,

    And the mind's distracted preoccupation,

    And error, forgetfulness, and neglect—

    All this, always and forever,

Is, in the past and in the future,

My Lord's creation for me; thus it is ascribed, in

My vision, to the ever-acting Creator,

At times, in my view; so I witness it as

My Lord's act, with no ambiguity in it.

So I see it all as favors

From my God; it is His turning toward me.

And it is kindness shown to me thereby,

And it is for honoring and exalting.

And the heart transforms a permitted act

Into obedience through intention, for perfection.

    And whatever belongs to disobedience

Has been transformed by prompt repentance,

And through acts of obedience it is turned

Into good, among the finest deeds.

    As my own act, independently.

To the true God, our Creator,

Who fulfills the desired goal and hopes.

    And when an act has

Two attributions, there is scope in the matter:

It is permissible; no sacred law forbids it,

No, nor does reason impose a fetter upon it.

An attribution to God—exalted is He—and likewise

An attribution to the servant—how can this be said?

    And both are real in their nature;

This is no metaphor, nor is it impossible.

Thus I am between seeing this as

Abundant favor from the Bountiful One,

And seeing it, at times, as coming from me:

Gratitude to my Lord, the Creator, the Most High.

And follows the footsteps of those who came before,

With constant sincerity and turning toward Him.
