مقاصدهاtheir purposes فهيfor they التيthose that لمnot تكنwere تقراread
مقاصدها فهي التي لم تكن تقرا
The letters of forms and meanings—transcendent
are their purposes; for they are those that have never been read.
فإنso if رمتyou seek ياO أوليmy First سواكother than yourself محققاًwith certainty
فإن رمت يا أولي سواك محققاً
عليكyou must attend بكto yourself افهمunderstand منصفاًimpartially أنكthat you are الأحرىthe worthier one
عليك بك افهم منصفاً أنك الأحرى
So if, O my First, you truly seek something other than yourself,
Attend to yourself; understand impartially that you are the worthier one.
وفوقand beyond مقامthe station of القصدseeking للكلfor all مقصدa goal
وفوق مقام القصد للكل مقصد
إليكtoward you أتىcomes باعاًan armspan إذاwhen جئتهyou come to it شبراa handspan
إليك أتى باعاً إذا جئته شبرا
And beyond the station of seeking is a goal for all:
It comes toward you an armspan when you come toward it a handspan.
تحققattain certainty بآثارthrough the traces of الأوانيthe vessels مجانباًshunning
تحقق بآثار الأواني مجانباً
بروقlightning flashes المعانيof meanings فالعظيمfor the Magnificent بناto us أحرىmore entitled
بروق المعاني فالعظيم بنا أحرى
Attain certainty through the traces of vessels, shunning
the lightning flashes of meanings; for the Magnificent has a stronger claim on us.
عليكupon you سلامpeace اللهof God ياO طالبseeker of الهدىguidance
عليك سلام الله يا طالب الهدى
مدىthroughout الدهرall time ماas long as مالتsway غصونthe boughs of الحمىthe sanctuary سكرىdrunken
مدى الدهر ما مالت غصون الحمى سكرى
Upon you be God's peace, O seeker of guidance,
Throughout all time, as long as the sanctuary's boughs sway, drunken.
