عدم يحيط به الوجود وإنما

عدم يحيط به الوجود وإنما

عرف الوجود إذا الوجود تكلما

عرف الوجود إذا الوجود تكلما

Nonbeing is encompassed by Being; and only

when Being speaks is Being known.

وهو الوجود وكلنا عدم بنا

وهو الوجود وكلنا عدم بنا

هو قد أحاط وقد أشار فأفهما

هو قد أحاط وقد أشار فأفهما

And He is Being, and we are all nonbeing;

He has encompassed us, given a sign, and made us understand.

صور بقرطاس تُقَصُّ فإنها

صور بقرطاس تُقَصُّ فإنها

معدومة ولها الوجود توهَّما

معدومة ولها الوجود توهَّما

Shapes are cut in a sheet of paper, for they

are nonexistent, and their existence is imagined.

أعنى بذلك أنها مقصوصة

أعنى بذلك أنها مقصوصة

في داخل القرطاس قصاً محكما

في داخل القرطاس قصاً محكما

By this I mean that they are cut out

within the paper, with a precise cut.

قرطاسها الموجود لا هي وحده

قرطاسها الموجود لا هي وحده

وهو المحيط بها وعنها أبهما

وهو المحيط بها وعنها أبهما

Only their paper exists, not the shapes themselves;

it encompasses them, yet is hidden from them.

وله الظهور بها بوصف إحاطة

وله الظهور بها بوصف إحاطة

فانظر وليس لنا الظهور لتعلما

فانظر وليس لنا الظهور لتعلما

Through them it is manifest as that which encompasses;

look, then, that you may know: manifestation is not ours.

وجميع هذا كله في لمحة

وجميع هذا كله في لمحة

يبدو ويخفى منةً وتكرُّما

يبدو ويخفى منةً وتكرُّما

And all of this, in its entirety, in an instant

appears and vanishes, as a favor and an act of generosity.

والأمر أمر الله يعني شأنه

والأمر أمر الله يعني شأنه

هو كل يوم فيه لن يتصرما

هو كل يوم فيه لن يتصرما

And the affair is God's affair—meaning His concern;

He is engaged in it each day, without end.

والخلق خلق الله أيضاً كلهم

والخلق خلق الله أيضاً كلهم

عدم إذا حققت أرضٌ أو سما

عدم إذا حققت أرضٌ أو سما

And creation, God's creation—all of it, too—

is nonbeing, if you ascertain the truth, whether earth or heaven.

وإذا مشيت مع العقول ووهمها

وإذا مشيت مع العقول ووهمها

كنت المؤخَّر والمحقُّ مقدَّما

كنت المؤخَّر والمحقُّ مقدَّما

And if you walk with the intellects and their delusion,

you will be left behind, while the one in the right is advanced.

إذ ما سوى مولاك جاءك باطل

إذ ما سوى مولاك جاءك باطل

في النص فانٍ هالكٌ كم ذا العمى

في النص فانٍ هالكٌ كم ذا العمى

For all besides your Lord has been declared vain to you

in the text—passing, perishing. How great this blindness!

فالمبطلون هم الذين تعلقوا

فالمبطلون هم الذين تعلقوا

بسوى الإله الحق من جهل نما

بسوى الإله الحق من جهل نما

So those in the wrong are those who have clung

to other than God, the Real, out of deepening ignorance.

والعارفون هم الذين قد اهتدوا

والعارفون هم الذين قد اهتدوا

فاتبعْ طريقَهمو وخذْها سُلَّما

فاتبعْ طريقَهمو وخذْها سُلَّما

And those who know are those who have found guidance;

so follow their path and take it as a ladder.

واسلك بها في الشرع شرع محمد

واسلك بها في الشرع شرع محمد

تجد الذي وجدوا وتصبح مسلما

تجد الذي وجدوا وتصبح مسلما

And follow it within the Law—the Law of Muhammad;

you will find what they found and become a Muslim.

صلى عليه الله ما ذهب الدجى

صلى عليه الله ما ذهب الدجى

وأتى الصباح وما الهزار ترنّما

وأتى الصباح وما الهزار ترنّما

May God bless him whenever night's darkness departs

and morning comes, and whenever the nightingale sings.
