طوبىblessedness لمنfor whoever كشفتlifted بصيرتُهhis inner sight الغطاthe veil
طوبى لمن كشفت بصيرتُه الغطا
وأتاهand came to him منfrom مولاهhis Lord أنواعkinds العطاgifts
وأتاه من مولاه أنواع العطا
Blessed is the one whose inner sight has lifted the veil.
Blessed is he whose insight is unveiled,
And gifts of every kind have come to him from his Lord.
And from his Master receives all kinds of gifts.
طابتgrew sweet لهfor him أوقاتهhis hours بحبيبهwith his beloved
طابت له أوقاته بحبيبه
وعنand concerning الذنوبthe sins لهfor him تجاوزhas pardoned والخطاand the errors
وعن الذنوب له تجاوز والخطا
His hours have grown sweet with his beloved,
His times are pleasant with his Beloved,
And his sins and errors have been pardoned.
And for him, sins have pardon and mistake.
طفcircumambulate حولaround كعبةthe Kaaba منthe one whom تحبyou love وقفand stand علىat
طف حول كعبة من تحب وقف على
عرفاتهhis Arafat وائتand come to المحلَّthe place الأوسطاcentral
عرفاته وائت المحلَّ الأوسطا
Circle the Kaaba of the one you love, and stand at
Circulate around the Kaaba of your love, stand at
His Arafat, and come to the central place.
Its Arafat, and come to the middle place.
طهرpurify لهfor him بيتاًa house ليسكنهso he may dwell in it وماand not
طهر له بيتاً ليسكنه وما
هوit غيرother than قلبكyour heart ظالماًunjust أوor مقسطاjust
هو غير قلبك ظالماً أو مقسطا
Purify a house for him to dwell in—it is none
Purify for him a house to live in, and nothing
Other than your heart, whether you are unjust or just.
Other than your heart is an oppressor or a just.
طنبورناour tanbur (lute) قدindeed أصلحتhave been tuned أوتارهits strings
طنبورنا قد أصلحت أوتاره
فأجادso it excelled فيin النغماتthe melodies حداًa degree مفرطاextreme
فأجاد في النغمات حداً مفرطا
Our tanbur’s strings have been tuned,
Our tambourine has fixed its strings,
And so it played its melodies exceedingly well.
So it excels in melodies, extremely.
طمعhoped الجهولthe ignorant man بأنthat ينالhe might attain بعقلهwith his reason
طمع الجهول بأن ينال بعقله
هذاthis النباthe tidings فأبىbut it refused عليهto him تسلطاmastery
هذا النبا فأبى عليه تسلطا
The ignorant man hoped to grasp with his reason
The ignorant hopes with his mind to attain
These tidings, but they would not yield to his mastery.
This prophecy, but it refused to submit to him.
طاعاتacts of obedience أقوامsome people معاصيsins غيرهمothers besides them
طاعات أقوام معاصي غيرهم
فاجعلso make فؤادكyour heart للغزالةfor the gazelle مهبطاa place of descent
فاجعل فؤادك للغزالة مهبطا
Some people’s acts of obedience are others’ sins;
The acts of some people are disobedience to others,
So make your heart a place for the gazelle to alight.
So make your heart a landing place for the gazelle.
طعobey منwhomever أردتyou wish فأنتfor you are طوعsubject to مرادthe will منthe one who
طع من أردت فأنت طوع مراد من
هوhe ظاهرmanifest بكthrough you فاحترزso beware أنlest تغلطاyou err
هو ظاهر بك فاحترز أن تغلطا
Obey whom you wish, for you are subject to the will of the one
Feed whom you want, for you obey the will of Him
Who is manifest through you; so take care not to err.
Who appears through you, so beware of making a mistake.
طهTa-Ha الرسولthe Messenger تكونتcame into being منfrom نورهhis light
طه الرسول تكونت من نوره
كلall البريةcreation ثمthen لوif تركhe cast aside الغطاthe veil
كل البرية ثم لو ترك الغطا
Ta-Ha, the Messenger—from his light came into being
Ta Ha is the Messenger, from his light
All creation; then, if he were to cast aside the veil...
All creation emerged, then if he removed the veil!
طالتgrew longer يديmy hand مذsince بايعتهI pledged allegiance to him علىupon الهدىguidance
طالت يدي مذ بايعته على الهدى
وبهand through him توخيتI sought المقامthe station الأحوطاthe safest
وبه توخيت المقام الأحوطا
My reach has grown since I pledged him allegiance to follow guidance,
My hand has lengthened since I pledged allegiance to him to guidance,
And through him I sought the safest station.
And in him I sought the most cautious standing.
