    Be an “I” only for your Master.

    And I am you, just as you are I.

    You are not you; I am not I.

    We ourselves have not emerged from pure annihilation.

    And He—and He is God, none other—so be

    He, not you; He descended and drew near.

    He is the Real; all besides Him is unreal.

    This is plainly stated in the Qur’an.

    And the Sunnah, too, has conveyed it.

    So hold fast to both, and you will attain your wishes.

    فهو تقدير هناك وهنا

    Unreal—that is, nonexistence He has decreed;

    so it is a decree, there and here.

    Never say that anything besides Him

    brings you joy and bliss.

    Alongside God, no other has existence.

    And all else wanes wherever there is self-disclosure.

    لا تخالطه بواجب الغنى

    Allow the contingent its contingency;

    do not mingle it with the necessarily Self-Sufficient.

    And know Him truly: you will find Him One,

    not mingled with anything nonexistent to us.

    لم يزل في العلم أمراً ممكنا

    The nonexistent is merely a creature of His;

    it has always been a contingent thing in knowledge.
