If you seek clarification through analogy, keeping a measured course,

Then take the words of one enraptured by the Real.

This is an analogy; I do not intend it as literal truth

For you—so grasp my intent and set vexation aside.

If you feign a limp, imitating a lame man, then indeed

You have performed an act, and that act has issued from you.

It is an accident—rather, a form that has appeared,

And you sustain it; it remains with you for a time.

It has no existence apart from its agent.

And the Agent is the Real; set no one equal to Him.

All creatures subsist through Him, for they are accidents,

And they are a veil over Him, always and forever.

All of them are His act, while illusion makes them

Entities other than Him; He is ever-acting, as has been handed down.

Thus, concerning all that the Doer does,

He is not questioned; rather, they will be questioned tomorrow.

God is not a body—no, nor an accident.

So grasp these words of mine and stretch a hand toward them.

The worlds are accidents, all of them,

As though they were a resounding echo in the Real's speech.

All is perishing, and the Real manifests through them,

An intermingled manifestation that you find united.

All subsist through Him, and all are from Him, for Him—

    His perishing accidents, seeking bounty.

And they say, 'In bodies subsist

His accidents,' misleading us with a corrupt doctrine.

When defining the body, they have mentioned

An aggregate of accidents—an entity they had in mind.

They said, 'It is the body'—I mean, what is composed of

Indivisible substances—a statement of people of guidance.

The indivisible substance is disputed, and indeed

Some denied it, while others affirmed it in vain.

And some said that the body is that which has

Length, breadth, and depth—the claim of people of perdition.

All that is other than the truth; they have reached

It through reason, not with revealed law as their warrant—

A doctrine held by certain philosophers,

Whom they have followed in this, in opinion and belief.

Rather, this teaching of ours, and what resembles it,

Is the religion of the Prophet, son of Abd Allah, for the blessed.

Whoever reflects on all these sayings

Will see what we have seen; so seek aid.
