Do not wrong God with what does not befit

Him; nor enter a narrow strait concerning Him.

For the ignorant have gone to extremes

in ascribing deficiency to Him, though He is the Compassionate.

He always shows them mercy, while they are blind

to Him—asses that have gone to extremes in braying.

Their conjectures contain contempt for themselves,

with no knowledge of the path among them.

Each one of them supposes that ruin

is guidance; conjecture is a wretched companion.

Drunk on the wine of his follies,

oh, if only he would one day sober up!

Alas for a people who likened their Lord to creatures

and fettered Him, yet He—He is unfettered.

They offend Him—glory be to Him—with what

they have ascribed to Him—things that do not befit Him.

And how many partners they have posited for Him!

Through this they fell from a far-distant place.

Likewise, they posited for Him a consort

and a son. Say: that one is a bondservant.

They worshipped idols in ignorance, and indeed

fell prostrate before them, in truth.

And they hung their idols upon the House

and defiled the ancient Sacred House.

They also worshipped fire, just as

they worship the sun in its radiance.

And they worship the calf out of their ignorance

and their disbelief in God, which brings ruin.

    Thus they offend Him continually,

yet He is patient and does not spill their water.

As the Qur'an has related this to us,

there had been all manner of distress,

until God brought the light of guidance,

and whatever hindered its radiance vanished.

Dawn broke, and with it wafted the fragrance of

rose gardens and a meadow of anemones.

And to the hearts of humankind became manifest

a Lord who had been an excellent friend to them.

And He is hidden from the intellect—indeed,

from the five senses: a true assertion.

He has no quiddity that would entail

His manifestation within it to one who awakens.

    بهم تجلى مثل برق بريق

    Creation is nothing but His manifestations;

through them He manifested Himself like gleaming lightning.

He has not changed—exalted is He—and He is the One who

changes all else and guides the company.

Take knowledge of Him from me, for in it I am

an ocean whose expanse is deep to enemies.

Beware the Compeller, lest He cast you into

my ocean—how many ignorant of me lie drowned!

Drink with me the cup of Being, which

frees you from need of anything else; it is pure wine.

And say to those who do not know what

they dwell in, owing to the obstructing malice within them:

O band of tyranny and slander,

how much longer? Stop the blaze, the blaze!

    ما حجر الكدّان مثل العقيق

    You are not like me, that you might know;

kaddān stone is not like agate.
