أيها القوم السكارى

بعقار وهو دونْ

بعقار وهو دونْ

O drunken people,

on wine that is lesser than

خمر أرباب المعاني

خمر أرباب المعاني

هو أعلى ما يكونْ

هو أعلى ما يكونْ

the wine of the masters of inner meanings—

it is the highest there can be.

فبطون من ظهور

فبطون من ظهور

وظهور من بطون

وظهور من بطون

Thus hiddenness comes from manifestation,

and manifestation from hiddenness.

أنفقوا الأجسام محقاً

أنفقوا الأجسام محقاً

في هوى عين العيون

في هوى عين العيون

They expended their bodies in annihilation,

in love of the Essence of essences.

ثم بالأرواح ساروا

ثم بالأرواح ساروا

في غرام وشجون

في غرام وشجون

Then they journeyed with their spirits

in ardent love and sorrows.

ثم عنهم خلعوا ما

ثم عنهم خلعوا ما

عاقهم دون المنون

عاقهم دون المنون

Then they cast off from themselves what

had hindered them before death.

فاعلموا يا أهل ودي

فاعلموا يا أهل ودي

أن من عز يهون

أن من عز يهون

So know, O people of my affection,

that whoever is exalted becomes lowly.

واسمعوا من قول ربي

واسمعوا من قول ربي

فله نحن الشئون

فله نحن الشئون

And listen to my Lord's words:

for we are His affairs.

أنفقوا ما قد جمعتم

أنفقوا ما قد جمعتم

من علوم وفنون

من علوم وفنون

Spend what you have gathered

of sciences and arts,

وذوات وصفات

وذوات وصفات

وخفوق وسكون

وخفوق وسكون

and essences and attributes,

and throbbing and stillness.

فلقد قال إله ال

فلقد قال إله ال

خلق في الذكر المصون

خلق في الذكر المصون

For indeed, thus spoke the God of

creation, in the safeguarded Scripture:

لن تنالوا البر حتى

لن تنالوا البر حتى

تنفقوا مما تحبون

تنفقوا مما تحبون

You will never attain righteousness until

you spend of what you love.
