ولقد دلني عليك محياً

لك قام الجمال فيه ينادي

لك قام الجمال فيه ينادي

And indeed, a countenance has guided me to you—

And it has led me to you alive

yours, in which beauty arose, calling.

For beauty stood up in it calling

وبجسمي أودى السقام وقلبي

زائل الصبر زائد الإيقاد

زائل الصبر زائد الإيقاد

And sickness has laid waste to my body, and my heart

And in my body the sickness destroyed me and my heart

is bereft of patience, its burning ever greater.

Lacking patience, increasing inflammation

وعيوني مدى الدجى شاخصات

وعيوني مدى الدجى شاخصات

آه من فرط دمعها والسهاد

آه من فرط دمعها والسهاد

And my eyes stare fixedly throughout the night's darkness.

And my eyes staring into the darkness

Ah, for their overflowing tears and sleeplessness!

Oh how much their tears and wakefulness

وشج بين صبوة وغرام

وشج بين صبوة وغرام

واشتياق وحرقة وارتعاد

واشتياق وحرقة وارتعاد

Entangled between infatuation and passion,

And yearning between youthfulness and passion

and longing, burning anguish, and trembling,

And longing, burning and tremors

واجتناب وقسوة وجفاء

واجتناب وقسوة وجفاء

وصدود ونفرة وبعاد

وصدود ونفرة وبعاد

and avoidance, cruelty, and coldness,

And avoidance, cruelty and aloofness

and rejection, aversion, and separation,

And rejection, aversion and distance

ورقيب ولائم وعذول

ورقيب ولائم وعذول

وبغيض وكاشح ومعادي

وبغيض وكاشح ومعادي

and a watcher, a reproacher, and a persistent reprover,

And a watcher, blamer and hostile

and a hateful one, a spiteful foe, and an enemy.

And hated, repellent and adversary

كيف يهنا بل كيف يبقى وهذا

كيف يهنا بل كيف يبقى وهذا

حاله وهو مؤذن بالنفاد

حاله وهو مؤذن بالنفاد

How can it find ease—rather, how can it survive—when this

How can he be content, rather how can he remain and this

is its state, heralding its end?

Is his state and he is warning of depletion

يا هلالاً طلعت بالنفس مني

فتحققت كثرتي واتحادي

O crescent moon, you rose within my soul,

Oh crescent that rose in my soul

and my multiplicity and my union were realized.

So my abundance and unity were realized

شهدت نورك القلوب فولت

شهدت نورك القلوب فولت

ظلمة الكون من عيون العباد

ظلمة الكون من عيون العباد

Hearts beheld your light, and away fled

The hearts witnessed your light so they turned

the world's darkness from the eyes of the servants.

The darkness of the universe from the eyes of worshippers

نظري للسوى إليك ولكن

نظري للسوى إليك ولكن

دق عن فكرتي لفقد رشادي

دق عن فكرتي لفقد رشادي

My gaze upon all else is toward you, yet

My sight is to none but you but

it proved too subtle for my thought, for I lacked sound judgment.

The thought of losing guidance knocked from my mind

ثم لما أردت مني تدنو

كنت أنت الحشى وسر الفؤاد

كنت أنت الحشى وسر الفؤاد

Then, when you wished to draw near to me,

Then when you wanted to approach me

you yourself were my innermost depths and the heart's secret.

You were the inner self and secret of my heart

وتلطفت بي فشاهدت مرءى

مقتضي ذاك أنت بالمرصاد

مقتضي ذاك أنت بالمرصاد

And you were gentle with me, so I beheld a vision;

And you were gentle with me so I saw a vision

the cause of that is you, lying in wait.

That required, it was you lying in wait
