على كشف الغطا كل الولوعِ

على كشف الغطا كل الولوعِ

وذلك في الأصول وفي الفروعِ

All ardent longing is for the lifting of the veil,

And that is in the roots and in the branches.

علمت فكنت في الإقبال أو لم

علمت فكنت في الإقبال أو لم

تكن تعلم فإنك في رجوع

تكن تعلم فإنك في رجوع

You knew, and so were drawing near; or, if you did not

Know, then you are turning back.

عفت دار المحب وذاب شوقاً

عفت دار المحب وذاب شوقاً

إلى محبوبه ذاك المنوع

إلى محبوبه ذاك المنوع

The lover's dwelling was effaced, and he melted with longing

For his beloved, that ever-withholding one.

علا ولقد رضعنا الغيب منه

علا ولقد رضعنا الغيب منه

وأنواع الكوائن كالضروع

وأنواع الكوائن كالضروع

Exalted is He, and indeed we have suckled the unseen from Him,

And the kinds of existing things are like udders.

علامة وصله فقدان كلي

علامة وصله فقدان كلي

به فيه ووجدان الخشوع

به فيه ووجدان الخشوع

The sign of union with Him is losing my whole self

Through Him, in Him, and finding humble awe.

عبيد الله بالله استقلوا

عبيد الله بالله استقلوا

إليه في الغروب وفي الطلوع

إليه في الغروب وفي الطلوع

God's servants, through God, have set forth

Toward Him, at sunset and at sunrise.

عزائمهم به فيه وأما

عزائمهم به فيه وأما

عبيد هوى النفوس فللزروع

عبيد هوى النفوس فللزروع

Their resolves are through Him, in Him; and as for

Slaves to the souls' desires, their resolves are for crops.

عماهم صدهم عنه فهاموا

عماهم صدهم عنه فهاموا

بدنياهم وبالعرض الخدوع

بدنياهم وبالعرض الخدوع

Their blindness barred them from Him, so they became enamored

Of their world and of deceitful, transient goods.

عسى عنه يماط حجاب وجه

عسى عنه يماط حجاب وجه

لهم هم ذاك ساعات الخضوع

لهم هم ذاك ساعات الخضوع

May a face's veil be lifted from Him

For them—they themselves are that veil—in hours of submission.

عفيف الذيل لا تطمع بوصل

عفيف الذيل لا تطمع بوصل

إذا لم تفن في البرق اللموع

إذا لم تفن في البرق اللموع

He is chaste of hem; do not hope for union

If you do not vanish in the flashing lightning.
