Ah, camel-driver, take me to that sanctuary.

For love's people are my kin, and its neighbors my flock.

Truly sweet to me, at love's Marwah and Safa,

has been my striving for union with them; my drink, too, has grown sweet.

And I have a yearning for those faces,

with which I dispel the illusions cast by the garb of dust.

Alas for those enamored of beauty in love!

They are bewildered between the sun's rising and setting.

And their beloved remains ever at odds with them:

when they incline to peace, he inclines to war.

I am content with spirit's union with spirit in absence,

but not, at the hour of meeting, with the recoil of the unattached.

I deem nearness in distance that requires fidelity

to love's covenant better than distance in nearness.

And I cast my body into distant dwellings,

far from the beloved, where the spirit's desire is fulfilled.

And love's hardship is easy when hope abounds,

and in it, intense anguish is joy of many kinds.

The heart is nothing but the place of loss and meeting,

and the body is only like a path for ecstasies.

Whoever does not know the beloved—the beating is painful

to him; but once he knows him, he delights in the beating.

Indeed, such in the Fire is the state of the wretched,

tomorrow, after the veil is drawn away from the Lord.

And 'that day' means a day of resurrection,

and a day of abiding thereafter, for sharp affliction.

Scratching the scab-ridden woman's hand makes her sores bleed,

yet the soul delights in it among scab-ridden souls.
