You are ʿAbd al-Ghani; be content, then, with a patched cloak.

You are ʿAbd al-Ghani, servant of the All-Sufficient, so be content with a patched cloak.

Keep company with people in piety, not through flattery.

وبوجه لمن يلاقيك طلق

وبوجه لمن يلاقيك طلق

عش عزيزاً ولا تذل لخلق

عش عزيزاً ولا تذل لخلق

And meet whoever encounters you with a cheerful face.

And show a cheerful face to whoever meets you.

Live with dignity, and never abase yourself before any creature.

واطلب الرزق في بلاد الحبيب

واطلب الرزق في بلاد الحبيب

لا تدع في الفؤاد همّاً وكربا

لا تدع في الفؤاد همّاً وكربا

Seek your provision in the lands of the Beloved.

And seek sustenance in the lands of the Beloved.

Let neither care nor anguish remain within the heart.

Leave no worry or anguish in your heart.

وتحقق وطب من الغيب شربا

وتحقق وطب من الغيب شربا

واقصد الله واقترب منه قربا

واقصد الله واقترب منه قربا

Attain realization, and rejoice in a draught from the Unseen.

And attain realization, and delight in drinking from the unseen.

Set your course toward God and draw near to Him—truly near.

And seek God, and draw close to Him.

ثم سر في البلاد شرقاً وغربا

ثم سر في البلاد شرقاً وغربا

وتوكل على القريب المجيب

وتوكل على القريب المجيب

Then journey through the lands, east and west.

Then travel through the lands, eastward and westward.

And put your trust in the Near One, the Answerer of prayers.

And trust in the Near One, who answers.

خذ بعلم الصوفي وعلم الفقيه

خذ بعلم الصوفي وعلم الفقيه

واترك الإدِّعا فلا خير فيه

واترك الإدِّعا فلا خير فيه

Take up the knowledge of the Sufi and the knowledge of the jurist.

Hold fast to the Sufi's knowledge and the jurist's knowledge.

And abandon pretension, for there is no good in it.

And abandon pretension, for there is no good in it.

والتزم سرة النبيل النبيه

والتزم سرة النبيل النبيه

فعسى أن تنال ما ترتجيه

فعسى أن تنال ما ترتجيه

And cleave to the innermost core of the noble, discerning one.

And cling to the navel of the noble, discerning one.

Then may you attain what you hope for,

So perhaps you will attain what you hope for,

بيد اللطف من مكان قريب

بيد اللطف من مكان قريب

By the hand of Grace, from a place close at hand.

By the hand of grace, from a place nearby.
