Be gentle, my enemy in love and my friend:

my beloved is she of the fluttering sash.

I never incline toward anyone but her.

If you wish, disagree in love—or agree.

She is unveiled to me whenever I wish, graciously,

in the cloaks and tunics of created beings’ bodily forms.

And she is the one who was, and I was; and thus

she is thus in western and eastern lands.

I am her garment in spirit and body; and she, in

my undressing and dressing, is like a lightning flash.

Rather, I am no garment for her; rather, she is for me

a garment in which I strut among creatures.

Rather, I am not a garment—no, nor is she a garment for me.

O thief, the thief’s right hand has been severed.

This open expanse has appeared; rise and stroll

in the light, and emerge from amid narrow passages.

And beware, for beyond that no created beings exist—

neither a joiner lacking independence nor a sunderer.

And derive, and strike a stone with the staff; there will flow

springs for you from it, with gushing water.

Then perform ablution in it, bathe, and with it enter

al-Aqsa Mosque, the abode of subtleties.

And there make one prostration before your beloved’s face,

followed by another—the prostration of a devoted lover.

You will attain your wishes and be beneath curtains

of his grace forever, and beneath a pavilion.
