The ranks of an Essence hold sway throughout creation,

Degrees of the Essence rule among creation.

and it is none but the Last—the One who precedes.

And they are none but the Last, who comes first.

The meanings of attributes have ranks beneath Him,

Meanings of attributes, beneath which lie degrees,

ancient in covenant, made known through temporal events.

Of ancient standing, known through temporal things.

مناط كلا الأمرين غيب مقدس

مناط كلا الأمرين غيب مقدس

وجود له منه عليه مترجم

وجود له منه عليه مترجم

The ground on which both matters rest is a hallowed Unseen:

The ground of both matters is a holy unseen reality.

an existence belonging to it, proceeding from it, and interpreting it.

Existence, for it and from it, interprets it.

محا ما بدا منه وأثبت ما اختفى

محا ما بدا منه وأثبت ما اختفى

ولاح طراز بالمراتب مُعْلَم

ولاح طراز بالمراتب مُعْلَم

It effaced what appeared from it and affirmed what lay concealed,

It effaced what appeared from it and affirmed what was hidden.

and an ornate design gleamed forth, marked with the ranks.

And an embroidered pattern shone forth, marked with the degrees.

مقامات قدس الذات معراج همتي

مقامات قدس الذات معراج همتي

وقلبي بُراقي والذي ثَمَّ مبهم

وقلبي بُراقي والذي ثَمَّ مبهم

The sacred stations of the Essence are my aspiration’s Ascension,

The holy stations of the Essence are my aspiration's ladder.

and my heart is my Buraq; what lies there is obscure.

And my heart is my Buraq; what lies there is obscure.

مكانة قرب دونها كل كائن

مكانة قرب دونها كل كائن

على الإرث نلناها وزال التوهم

على الإرث نلناها وزال التوهم

A station of nearness beneath which every existent stands—

A station of nearness beneath which lies every being:

through inheritance we attained it, and delusion vanished.

We attained it by inheritance, and illusion vanished.

معي سرها باق وإن حجد السوى

معي سرها باق وإن حجد السوى

وإن غشي الليل الذي هو مظلم

وإن غشي الليل الذي هو مظلم

Its secret abides with me, though all else deny it,

Its secret abides with me, even if all else denies it,

and though the night, dark as it is, should close in.

And even if the night, which is dark, envelops me.

مشيت بها أسعى على حكم أمرها

مشيت بها أسعى على حكم أمرها

وعندي لها بيت حرامٌ وزمزم

وعندي لها بيت حرامٌ وزمزم

With it I walked, pressing on as its command decreed,

I walked with it, striving as its command decreed.

and I possess for it a Sacred House and Zamzam.

And I have for it a Sacred House and Zamzam.

مبين كتابي ناطق بكلامها

مبين كتابي ناطق بكلامها

وإني وإياها الذي يتكلم

وإني وإياها الذي يتكلم

My book makes it clear, giving voice to its speech,

My book is clear, speaking with its words.

and I, together with it, am the one who speaks.

And indeed I and it are the one who speaks.

مضت قبلنا أمثالنا وستهتدي

مضت قبلنا أمثالنا وستهتدي

إليها أناس بعدنا وتسلم

إليها أناس بعدنا وتسلم

Those like us passed before us, and people after us will be guided

Those like us passed before us; and those who will find guidance

to it—and it will remain intact.

To it are people after us, who will submit.
