1. ذهب الخوف والرجا

    ومضى المدح والهجا

    Fear and hope have departed,

    And praise and invective have passed away.

  2. وأنا اليوم مسلم

    بك قلبي إليك جا

    And today I submit;

    Through you, my heart has come to you.

  3. طال ما كنت في عمى

    لم أجد عنه مخرجا

    Long was I in blindness,

    I found no way out of it.

  4. جامد الذات خامداً

    حامداً ظلمة الدجا

    Rigid in essence, extinguished,

    Praising the darkness of night.

  5. وأنا في كثافة

    مطري منك أثلجا

    And I was in a dense state,

    My rain from you turned to snow.

  6. مستقيمي القويم بي

    مثل قوم تعوجا

    What was straight and upright in me

    Became crooked, like a people.

  7. حائراً بي أتيه في

    ليل وهمي الذي سجا

    Bewildered by myself, I wander in

    The night of my illusion, which lay still.

  8. فبدت نارك التي

    كان موسى لها التجى

    Then your fire appeared, which

    Moses had turned to for refuge.

  9. فتقصدت جمرها

    عندما قد تأججا

    So I sought out its embers,

    When they had blazed up,

  10. وتذاوبت فوقه

    باحتراق فأنتجا

    And I melted above them

    Through burning, and so it yielded:

  11. جامدي صار مائعاً

    كله يا أولي الحجا

    What was solid in me became liquid,

    All of it, O people of understanding.

  12. وأنائي غسلته

    وبدا الصبح أبلجا

    And I washed my vessel,

    And dawn appeared radiant.

  13. وخزامى شممت من

    نفحاتي وعرفجا

    And I smelled lavender from

    My fragrant wafts, and ‘arfaj.

  14. إن رحماننا له

    نفس قد تأرجا

    Indeed, our All-Merciful has

    A breath that has spread fragrance.

  15. كنت أشتاقه وقد

    كان أوساً وخزرجا

    I used to yearn for it, and already

    It was Aws and Khazraj:

  16. نصرة الدين لي به

    وعن الكرب فرجا

    Through it, support for the faith was mine,

    And relief from distress.

  17. وقعت قطرتاي في

    بحر أمر تموجا

    My two drops fell into

    A sea of command that surged.

  18. كيف أمتاز بعد أن

    أوضح الحق منهجا

    How can I stand apart after

    The Truth has made a path clear?

  19. من كفوف الهزبر وال

    ناب ما واقعي نجا

    From the lion's paws and the

    Fang, my reality did not escape.

  20. واسقياني عتيقة

    يا خليلي وامزجا

    And give me aged wine to drink,

    O my two friends, and mix it.

  21. وعلى حيِّ ربَّةِ ال

    خال بالقلب عَرِّجا

    And toward the camp of the lady with the

    Beauty mark, turn aside in your hearts.

  22. إنني مستهامهما

    ولي البعد أزعجا

    Indeed, I am enamored of them both,

    And distance has distressed me.

  23. لم أجد مثل حسنها

    قط أبهى وأبهجا

    I have found no equal to her beauty,

    Ever—none more splendid or delightful.

  24. سلبتني بناظر

    طرفه صار أدعجا

    She robbed me with a gaze,

    From an eye that had grown large and dark.

  25. وسبتني بطلعة

    لم يقم بعدها الدجا

    And she took me captive with a face

    After which night's darkness did not remain.

  26. وجهها قد عشقته

    لا سواراً ودملجا

    Her face I have loved,

    Not a bracelet or an armlet.

  27. وأنا اليوم مغرم

    حبها مهجتي شجا

    And today I am lovesick;

    Her love has grieved my soul.

  28. كلما ناح طائر

    حث شوقي وهيجا

    Whenever a bird laments,

    It spurs my longing and inflames it.

  29. وغدا الجفن من دمي

    في بكائي مضرجا

    And my eyelid, from my blood, became

    Crimson-stained in my weeping.

  30. ثم قلبي وقالبي

    للفنا قد تدرجا

    Then my heart and my bodily form

    Advanced by degrees toward annihilation.
