O my boon companion; drink in the evening and the morning.

My companion, be intoxicated and awake refreshed

The wine of the Essence revealed itself and rose

The wine of the essence has appeared and arisen

above the meanings of the cosmos on the day of joy.

Above the meanings of the universe on the day of joy

لا يراها غيرها من أحد

لا يراها غيرها من أحد

كل طرف بالسوى منجرح

كل طرف بالسوى منجرح

No one other than itself sees it;

None can see it but itself

every eye is wounded by otherness.

Every glance at anything else is wounded

هذه لا هذه أنت ولا

هذه لا هذه أنت ولا

أنت فاعرف عين هذا الشبح

أنت فاعرف عين هذا الشبح

This—not this—is you, and not

This is not that, nor are you that

you; so know the essence of this apparition.

So know the eye of this specter

هو عين الكل لا كل سوى

عينه عين العطا والمنح

عينه عين العطا والمنح

He is the essence of all; there is no all apart from

It is the eye of all, nothing but

His essence, the essence of bounty and gifts.

His eye, the eye of bounty and giving

بيته الغيب فإن لم تستطع

بيته الغيب فإن لم تستطع

لا تحل عن بابه المنفتح

لا تحل عن بابه المنفتح

His house is the unseen; so if you cannot,

Its abode is the unseen, so if you cannot

do not leave His open door.

Do not leave its open door

ربما يقبلك البواب إن

ربما يقبلك البواب إن

كنت ذا قلب له منطرح

كنت ذا قلب له منطرح

Perhaps the doorkeeper will receive you, if

Perhaps the gatekeeper will accept you

you have a heart prostrate before Him.

If you have a heart surrendered to him

واحد عدده العقل لنا

واحد عدده العقل لنا

بانتظام كعقود السبح

بانتظام كعقود السبح

One, whom reason has made many for us,

One is his number, reason to us

in orderly sequence, like strings of prayer beads.

Like beads strung together

فتحقق وتدقق واعترف

فتحقق وتدقق واعترف

أنك الفرد الذي لم تلمح

أنك الفرد الذي لم تلمح

So realize, scrutinize, and acknowledge

So realize, ponder, and confess

that you are the unique One you have not glimpsed.

That you are the individual you did not perceive

وتوحد واترك الكثرة عن

وتوحد واترك الكثرة عن

وهمك الحاجب عنه واستح

وهمك الحاجب عنه واستح

And become one, and cast multiplicity away from

Unify and leave multiplicity from

your imagination, which veils you from Him; and be abashed.

Your delusion, veiling it, and wipe yourself clean

أنت حق واحد لا غيره

أنت حق واحد لا غيره

غيره أنت فَطِبْ وانشرح

غيره أنت فَطِبْ وانشرح

You are one Reality, not other than Him;

You are the one truth, none other

His other is you; so be glad and at ease.

Other than you, so be content and expand

وادخل الحضرة يا حضرته

وادخل الحضرة يا حضرته

وتعانق معه واصطلح

وتعانق معه واصطلح

And enter the Presence, O His presence,

And enter the presence, O its presence

and embrace Him, and make peace.

And embrace him and reconcile

لمتى أنت سواه لمتى

لمتى أنت سواه لمتى

في نزاع أنت مت واسترح

في نزاع أنت مت واسترح

How long will you be other than Him—how long?

How long will you be other than him? How long

You are in strife; die and rest.

In conflict? Die and rest

يا وجوداً واحداً ليس له

يا وجوداً واحداً ليس له

غير أسماء به لا تنمحي

غير أسماء به لا تنمحي

O single Being, who possesses nothing

O one existence, having no

but names that in Him are never effaced,

Other than names by which it does not fade

ظهرت عنه له في صور

ظهرت عنه له في صور

فانيات مثل قوس القزح

فانيات مثل قوس القزح

they appeared from Him, for Him, in forms

It appeared from him for him in

that perish, like a rainbow.

Ephemeral forms like the rainbow’s arc

كن له لا لسواه أبداً

كن له لا لسواه أبداً

وانغسِلْ عنك به وانمسح

وانغسِلْ عنك به وانمسح

Be His, never another's,

Be for him, not for another, ever

and be washed of yourself through Him, and be effaced.

And cleanse yourself with him and wipe yourself

كن جماداً وإذا شئت به

كن جماداً وإذا شئت به

كن نباتاً مثمراً كالبلح

كن نباتاً مثمراً كالبلح

Be an inanimate thing; and if you wish, through Him

Be an inanimate object and if you wish with him

be a fruit-bearing plant, like the date palm.

Be a fruitful plant like the date palm

وإذا شئت كنِ الحَيْوان يا

وإذا شئت كنِ الحَيْوان يا

أيها الإنسان وقت المرح

أيها الإنسان وقت المرح

And if you wish, be an animal, O

And if you wish, be an animal, O

human being, in the hour of merriment.

Human, in the time of play

وانجمع إن شئت طوراً وافترق

وانجمع إن شئت طوراً وافترق

كيفما كنت ولا تقترح

كيفما كنت ولا تقترح

And gather yourself, if you wish, for a time, and disperse,

And gather, if you wish, sometimes, and separate

however you may be; and make no demands.

However you may be, and do not propose

هذه الأطوار لا تبقى له

هذه الأطوار لا تبقى له

هي برق لاح للملتمح

هي برق لاح للملتمح

These states do not endure for Him;

These states do not remain for him

they are lightning that flashed before the beholder.

They are a lightning flash glimpsed by the squinter

يتجلى هو في الكون بها

يتجلى هو في الكون بها

لا بها مزدلف في قرح

لا بها مزدلف في قرح

He reveals Himself in the cosmos through them;

He is manifested in the universe through them

no one drawing near through them is in pain.

Not by them drawn near in affliction

كم شحيح قام بالنفس فلم

كم شحيح قام بالنفس فلم

يلقها لما تجلت كم شحي

يلقها لما تجلت كم شحي

How many a miser clung to the self, and did not

How miserly is one who stood by his soul and did not

meet it when it revealed itself—how great my stinginess!

Meet it when it appeared! How miserly!
