Realize: the spirit in all is one.

There is nothing but the spirit; one who finds it knows it.

And that is of God's command, as has been stated.

And the command is but one, and it is a witness.

And the Lord of the command, who is God—there is no doubt that

He is the One sought, and all are seeking.

And that spirit has become all the intellects and the

souls and bodies of created beings, coming in succession.

Thus they appear other than it, though it is their very essence.

Sound, witnessing spiritual taste perceives it.

And one ignorant of what is sensed supposes multiplicity,

and an obstinate intellect follows him in delusion.

And that spirit is glimpsed like lightning, appearing

from the command—the unseen of the unseen—then it returns,

according to the demands of the Names; and all of them

are the Face—the Face of God, mentioned in the text.

And the spirit was the Face's mirror, in which

    its traces and purposes gleam.

So all the worlds appear in the spirit,

wandering reflections of what God wills.

And their ordering in knowledge appears thus

to us: a child, a mother, and a father.

And when one perceives the image of his face in the mirror,

then this perception supports both the face and the mirror.

And through the image the mirror hid itself from him,

so he supposed what he supposed, while reason lay asleep.

And for this reason, the people of our path said:

What comes forth from the Real is an image and a shadow.

And the poor man did not understand what a knower said,

and he has thought ill, while denying the Real.

So, had the All-Merciful guided that man aright,

he would see his deficiency in himself and strive,

and morning and evening he would be occupied with himself,

and his heart would be detached from all that hinders.

But he is the detested one, by his Lord's decree

against him; he does not know, and he is not rightly guided.
