إن من آيات ربي هو قالْ

إن من آيات ربي هو قالْ

نومَكم كل نهار وليالْ

نومَكم كل نهار وليالْ

Indeed, among my Lord's signs—as He said—

Indeed, among the signs of my Lord, He said:

is your sleep every day and night.

Your sleep every day and night,

وكذا الناس نيامٌ قاله

وكذا الناس نيامٌ قاله

من أتى بالحق في صدق المقالْ

من أتى بالحق في صدق المقالْ

And likewise, 'People are asleep,' said

And so people are asleep, He said it

the one who brought the truth in truthful speech.

Who came with the truth in the sincerity of speech

وإذا ماتوا يقول انتبهوا

وإذا ماتوا يقول انتبهوا

ومضى عنهم به حكم الخيال

ومضى عنهم به حكم الخيال

'And when they die,' he says, 'they awaken,'

And when they died, He said: Wake up!

and through it, imagination's sway departs from them.

And He passed by them as per the rule of imagination

فافهموا ذا القول يا أمته

فافهموا ذا القول يا أمته

تهتدوا للحق من غير جدال

تهتدوا للحق من غير جدال

So understand this saying, O his community,

So understand this saying, O His nation

and you will be guided to the Truth without dispute.

Be guided to the truth without contention

كل ما أدركتموه صوَرٌ

كل ما أدركتموه صوَرٌ

في منام من جلال وجمال

في منام من جلال وجمال

Everything you have perceived consists of images

Everything you have perceived is an image

in a dream, from majesty and beauty.

In a dream of majesty and beauty

عَبِّروه تعرفوه واجزموا

عَبِّروه تعرفوه واجزموا

أنه الحق تعالى ذو الجلال

أنه الحق تعالى ذو الجلال

Interpret it, and you will recognize Him; be certain

Interpret it and know it and ascertain

that He is the Truth, exalted, the Possessor of Majesty.

That He is the Exalted Truth, the Majestic

مطلقٌ في نومكم تلقونه

مطلقٌ في نومكم تلقونه

في قيود كلُّها عنه محال

في قيود كلُّها عنه محال

He is absolute; in your sleep you encounter Him

Free in your sleep you meet Him

in constraints, all of them impossible for Him.

In shackles, all impossible in relation to Him

ما له كيفٌ لا كيفيةٌ

ما له كيفٌ لا كيفيةٌ

يتجلَّى بنساءٍ ورجال

يتجلَّى بنساءٍ ورجال

He has no 'how,' no modality;

He has no "how", no "how-ness"

He manifests through women and men,

He manifests as women and men

وكبارٍ وصغارٍ مثل ما

وكبارٍ وصغارٍ مثل ما

جاء في القرآن عنه وهو قال

جاء في القرآن عنه وهو قال

and the old and the young, just as

And elders and youngsters, as

it came in the Qur'an concerning Him—and He said:

Came in the Quran about Him, and He said

قال إنَّا كلَّ شيءٍ فارفعوا

قال إنَّا كلَّ شيءٍ فارفعوا

لامَ كلٍّ خبراً يتلوه تال

لامَ كلٍّ خبراً يتلوه تال

He said, 'Indeed We are everything'; so make

He said: "Indeed, all things - so raise

the lām of 'kull' nominative—a predicate a reciter recites.

For each thing a report recited in succession"

وكذا قال له ما في السما

وكذا قال له ما في السما

وات والأرض وكم قال مثال

وات والأرض وكم قال مثال

And likewise He said, 'His is whatever is in the heavens

And so He said to him what is in the heavens

and the earth'; and how many a likeness He has uttered!

And the earth and how much examples He said

يا نياماً عبِّروا الرؤيا به

يا نياماً عبِّروا الرؤيا به

هو حقٌّ وسوى الحق ضلال

هو حقٌّ وسوى الحق ضلال

O sleepers, interpret the dream through Him:

O sleepers, interpret the vision through Him

He is the Truth, and all besides the Truth is error.

He is the Truth, and other than the Truth is misguidance

كل شيءٍ هالكٌ قال وَكُل

كل شيءٍ هالكٌ قال وَكُل

مَنْ عليها هو فانٍ بالزوال

مَنْ عليها هو فانٍ بالزوال

He said, 'Everything is perishing,' and 'All

Everything is perishable, He said: and everyone

who are upon it are transient, passing away.'

Upon it will perish with evanescence

واقرأوا القرآنَ مثلي تجدوا

واقرأوا القرآنَ مثلي تجدوا

كلَّ ما قد قلته كلَّ الكمال

كلَّ ما قد قلته كلَّ الكمال

And read the Qur'an as I do; you will find

And read the Quran like me you will find

all that I have said, in utter perfection.

Everything I have said perfectly

لا أنا أيضاً ولا أنتم ولا

لا أنا أيضاً ولا أنتم ولا

كل شيء من مياه وجبال

كل شيء من مياه وجبال

Not I, either, nor you, nor

Neither me, nor you, nor

anything of waters and mountains—

Anything of seas and mountains

بل خيلات عقول ظهرت

بل خيلات عقول ظهرت

في منام وهو رب متعال

في منام وهو رب متعال

rather, imaginings of minds, which appeared

But imaginations of intellects appeared

in a dream, while He is the transcendent Lord.

In a dream, and He is the Exalted Lord

إنه الله وجودٌ واحدٌ

إنه الله وجودٌ واحدٌ

حكمه فينا حرام وحلال

حكمه فينا حرام وحلال

Indeed, He is God—one Being;

He is God, the One Existence

His judgment for us: the forbidden and the lawful.

His rule over us the lawful and unlawful

وهو حق وسواه باطل

وهو حق وسواه باطل

وإلى الحق رجوع ومآل

وإلى الحق رجوع ومآل

And He is the Truth, and all besides Him is false;

And He is the Truth, and other than Him falsehood

and to the Truth are return and final destination.

And to the Truth is the return and destination

وإليه ترجعون اللهُ قد

وإليه ترجعون اللهُ قد

قال في القرآنِ والسبع الطوال

قال في القرآنِ والسبع الطوال

'And to Him you shall be returned'—God has

And to Him you will return, Allah has

said in the Qur'an and the Seven Long Surahs.

Said in the Quran and the seven long ones

أينما أنتم تولوا ثم وج

أينما أنتم تولوا ثم وج

هُ الإِله الحق محمود الفعال

هُ الإِله الحق محمود الفعال

Wherever you turn, there is the face

Wherever you turn, then the face

of God, the Truth, praised for His deeds.

Of God is the true, the Appraised, the Doer

لا تصدق أنت رؤياك كما

لا تصدق أنت رؤياك كما

للخليل القول قد كان يقال

للخليل القول قد كان يقال

Do not yourself take your dream literally, as

Do not believe your dream as

the saying had been spoken to the Friend;

The saying was to the Friend said

واتبع التعبير في الرؤيا تَفُز

واتبع التعبير في الرؤيا تَفُز

بالمنى لا بجواب وسؤال

بالمنى لا بجواب وسؤال

and follow interpretation in dreams; you will attain

And follow the interpretation in the vision, you will win

your wishes, not through answer and question.

The purpose, not by answer and question

هذه الغاية في العرفان لا

هذه الغاية في العرفان لا

ما يقول الغير من قيل وقال

ما يقول الغير من قيل وقال

This is the goal in gnosis, not

This is the ultimate in gnosis, not

what others say in hearsay and idle talk.
