إذا ما سمعت النايَ سوّاه منشدٌ

إذا ما سمعت النايَ سوّاه منشدٌ

لينفخ فيه فاعتبر واكتسب حالا

لينفخ فيه فاعتبر واكتسب حالا

When you hear the reed flute a chanter has fashioned

When you hear the flute played well by a musician

To blow into it, take heed and acquire a spiritual state.

So he can blow into it, consider and gain insight

وقابل به يوم المقابلة التي

وقابل به يوم المقابلة التي

تصحح منك النفس كشفاً وإقبالا

تصحح منك النفس كشفاً وإقبالا

And with it face the day of the encounter that

And respond to it on the day of the meeting which

Sets your soul aright through unveiling and devotion.

Will correct your soul with revelation and devotion

ودع عنك أهل اللهو فهو محرم

ودع عنك أهل اللهو فهو محرم

عليهم كما قالوا وإن قولهم طالا

عليهم كما قالوا وإن قولهم طالا

And leave aside the people of frivolous amusement, for it is forbidden

And leave behind the people of vain amusement for it is forbidden

To them, as they have said, even if their discourse runs long.

To them as they have said though their words be prolonged

فآدم ناي الله سواه نافخاً

فآدم ناي الله سواه نافخاً

من الروح فيه روحه مثل ما قالا

من الروح فيه روحه مثل ما قالا

For Adam is God's reed flute; He fashioned him, breathing

For Adam is the flute of God, made well by Him

His spirit into him from the spirit, just as He said.

The breath in it His spirit, as the two have told

وقد أظهر الأسماء منه معلماً

وقد أظهر الأسماء منه معلماً

ملائكة أبدوا لهم فيه أقوالا

ملائكة أبدوا لهم فيه أقوالا

And He made the names manifest through him, teaching

And He manifested from it the names as a teacher

Angels who had voiced words concerning him to them.

Angels spoke to them in it with words

ومن بعد ذا لما تبين فضله

ومن بعد ذا لما تبين فضله

له سجدوا طوعاً فنالوه آمالا

له سجدوا طوعاً فنالوه آمالا

And after that, when his excellence became clear,

And after this when its merit was made clear

They prostrated to him willingly and attained their hopes in him.

They willingly bowed to it, and attained hopes

خذ الأمر وافهم يا ابن ودي مقالتي

خذ الأمر وافهم يا ابن ودي مقالتي

وحقق لأصحاب الإشارة أمثالا

وحقق لأصحاب الإشارة أمثالا

Take the matter to heart and understand my words, O son of my love,

Take this advice and understand, my son, my words

And establish analogies for those versed in allusion.

And fulfill for the people of signs examples
