فازtriumphed الذيthe one who شربdrank الشرابthe drink الصافيpure
فاز الذي شرب الشراب الصافي
حتىuntil انمحىwas effaced عنfrom سائرall الأوصافattributes
حتى انمحى عن سائر الأوصاف
Triumphant is he who drank the pure draught,
The one who drank the pure wine succeeded,
Until he was effaced from every attribute.
Until he forgot all other attributes.
فنيتvanished رسومtraces وجودهhis existence وبداand appeared لهto him
فنيت رسوم وجوده وبدا له
وجهface الحبيبthe Beloved فكانso he was نعمhow excellent الكافيthe one who suffices
وجه الحبيب فكان نعم الكافي
The traces of his existence vanished, and to him appeared
The forms of his existence vanished, and there appeared to him,
The Beloved's face—how well he sufficed!
The face of the Beloved, and it was the best fulfillment.
فيon ذروةcrest الواديthe valley غزالa gazelle نافرshying away
في ذروة الوادي غزال نافر
عمنfrom whoever يحاولattempts وصفهhis description المتنافيcontradictory
عمن يحاول وصفه المتنافي
On the valley's crest is a gazelle that shies away
In the peak of the valley, a gazelle fleeing,
From whoever attempts a contradictory description of him.
From the one who tries to describe the Incomparable.
فرعa branch بناthrough us هوhe أصلناour root فاعجبso marvel لهat him
فرع بنا هو أصلنا فاعجب له
منas واحدa single one ويزيدand he exceeds عنbeyond آلافthousands
من واحد ويزيد عن آلاف
A branch through us, he is our root—so marvel at him:
A branch from us is our origin, how wondrous for Him,
A single one, yet surpassing thousands.
From One and more than thousands.
فردthe unique one الوجودexistence بوجههwith his face فتنbewitched الورىcreation
فرد الوجود بوجهه فتن الورى
فرمىso he cast بهمwith them فيinto حيرةbewilderment وخلافand discord
فرمى بهم في حيرة وخلاف
The unique one in existence bewitched creation with his face,
He dazzled the worlds with His face,
So he cast them into bewilderment and discord.
And threw them into confusion and disagreement.
فاقتsurpassed علىabove شمسsun الضحىmidmorning أنوارهhis lights
فاقت على شمس الضحى أنواره
والكونand the cosmos آلcame بهthrough him إلىto الإتلافdestruction
والكون آل به إلى الإتلاف
His lights outshone the midmorning sun,
His lights surpassed the sun at dawn,
And through him the cosmos came to annihilation.
And the universe turned to destruction through Him.
فقهunderstanding المعارفspiritual knowledge والحقائقand realities ظاهرevident
فقه المعارف والحقائق ظاهر
منfrom عبدهhis servant فيin سورةsurah الأعرافal-A'raf (the Heights)
من عبده في سورة الأعراف
Understanding of spiritual knowledge and realities is evident
The realities and truths of knowledge are evident,
From his servant in Surah al-A'raf.
From His servant in Surat Al-A'raf.
فهوso he is الجميلthe Beautiful One لهbelongs to him الجمالbeauty بأسرهin its entirety
فهو الجميل له الجمال بأسره
وهوand he is الذيthe one who يهوىloves الجمالbeauty الوافيperfect
وهو الذي يهوى الجمال الوافي
So he is the Beautiful One; all beauty is his,
He is the Beautiful, for Him is all beauty,
And he is the one who loves perfect beauty.
And He is the one who loves fulfilling beauty.
فهمتunderstood إشارتَهhis sign القلوبُthe hearts فأقبلتso they came forward
فهمت إشارتَه القلوبُ فأقبلت
تزهوglowing إليهtoward him علىin تقىpiety وعفافand chastity
تزهو إليه على تقى وعفاف
The hearts understood his sign, so they came forward,
The hearts understood His hints, so they came,
Glowing toward him in piety and chastity.
Yearning to Him in piety and chastity.
فمحاso he effaced بنورwith the light of ظهورهhis manifestation آثارهاtheir traces
فمحا بنور ظهوره آثارها
وأمدهاand he sustained them ببدائعwith marvels of الألطافgrace
وأمدها ببدائع الألطاف
So with the light of his manifestation he effaced their traces,
With the light of His appearance, He erased their traces,
And sustained them with wondrous graces.
And endowed them with wonders and subtleties.
