My heart is filled with longings and ardent love.

And the arduous matter has become intractable and perplexing for me.

So, O you who persist in shunning and aversion,

When I say, “Estrangement has bestowed on me robes of decay,”

You say, “Were it not for estrangement, love would not be sweet.”

I have lost my endurance between your nearness and separation.

And yearning has grown intense in my entrails, where it dwells.

I am bewildered: if I say, “Be gentle,” passion spurs me on.

And if I say, “This heart has been burned by love's anguish,”

You say, “Through the fires of love's anguish the heart is ennobled.”

Gently, O you who have killed me with aloofness,

And neglected what you promised me of union,

When I say, “Be gentle; I have melted away,” you add to my suffering.

And if I say, “What is my sin against you?” you answer me:

“Your existence is a sin with which no sin compares.”
