No, by a radiant face that has attained beauty,
A face not veiled, possessing beauty
Time passes through it, state after state.
Time passes through it, state after state
لاذتsought refuge الأنفسthe souls أنthat يعدمهاHe might annihilate them
لاذت الأنفس أن يعدمها
بتجليهthrough His self-revelation كماas شاءHe willed جلالاin majesty
بتجليه كما شاء جلالا
The souls sought refuge, that He might annihilate them
Souls yearn for him to end them
Through His self-revelation, as He willed in majesty.
With his manifestation, as he willed, Majestic
لامنيblamed me منfrom غيرlack of علمknowledge عاذليmy reproacher
لامني من غير علم عاذلي
وبهand about Him أكثرgave much ليto me قيلاًhearsay وقالاand gossip
وبه أكثر لي قيلاً وقالا
My reproacher blamed me without knowledge,
Do not blame me without knowledge, reproacher
And about Him he gave me much hearsay and gossip.
And through him, more speech and words are said to me
لاكchewed فيin فيهhis mouth حديثيmy words ورمىand hurled
لاك في فيه حديثي ورمى
يمنةto the right بالحقwith the truth منهfrom it وشمالاand to the left
يمنة بالحق منه وشمالا
He chewed my words in his mouth and hurled
In him is my discourse and aim
The truth from them to right and left.
Rightly with truth from him, and left
لانتsoftened القسوةharshness منthrough عارفناone who knows us
لانت القسوة من عارفنا
فانقلواso transmit عناfrom us الأحاديثthe accounts الطوالاlengthy
فانقلوا عنا الأحاديث الطوالا
Harshness softened through the one who knows us,
Hardship has departed from our knower
So pass on our lengthy accounts.
So convey from us the long tales
لاقbefitted بالقلبfor the heart هوىlove ساكنهits indweller
لاق بالقلب هوى ساكنه
وهوand He يفنيهannihilates it ويبقيهand preserves it محالاan impossibility
وهو يفنيه ويبقيه محالا
Love for its indweller befitted the heart,
The heart's passion dwelling in it
And He annihilates it and preserves it as an impossibility.
It destroys him and keeps him, impossible
لازمpersisted in كشفunveiling تجليهHis self-revelation لناto us
لازم كشف تجليه لنا
بتجليهthrough His self-revelation وإنand even if أفنىHe annihilates الرجالاthe men
بتجليه وإن أفنى الرجالا
He persisted in unveiling His self-revelation to us,
Clinging, the unveiling of his manifestation to us
Through His self-revelation, even if He annihilates men.
With his manifestation, though it destroys men
لابسtook on مناfrom us عليهاupon them صوراًforms
لابس منا عليها صوراً
فيin التقاديرthe decrees of fate حراماًforbidden وحلالاand lawful
في التقادير حراماً وحلالا
He took on forms from us upon them,
Wearing from us images upon it
In the decrees of fate, forbidden and lawful.
In destinies, forbidden and permitted
لاحshone نورthe light الحقthe Real منfrom ظلمتناour darkness
لاح نور الحق من ظلمتنا
فانمحتso it vanished عناfrom us وكناهand we were Him تعالىexalted is He
فانمحت عنا وكناه تعالى
The light of the Real shone from our darkness,
The light of truth shone from our darkness
So it vanished from us, and we were He—exalted is He.
So it was erased from us, and we called him Exalted
لاثتbecame entwined الأقوامthe peoples منهfrom Him شغفاًin passionate love
لاثت الأقوام منه شغفاً
وبهand through Him قدalready سترواthey veiled منهof His كمالاperfection
وبه قد ستروا منه كمالا
The peoples became entwined in passionate love from Him,
The people have become enraptured with him
And through Him they have veiled some of His perfection.
And through him they have veiled his perfection
