O one who worships a lord through his own imagining,

while his intellect lies subject to His control:

he understands a thing and thinks that what

he understands is God, as he sets it down.

God is your Creator, beyond all doubt,

and the Creator of reason and its conceptions.

Whoever does not find himself unable to know

his Lord has spoken of altering Him.

For all that lies within his intellect

is created for him through some of His influence.

O one content with reason concerning his Lord,

there is nothing in it but his own estimation.

And you are veiled from Him by what

the soul has imagined from what is other than Him.

You think that God is that which

you have grasped, and seek refuge in its goodness.

Far from it, far from it! Alas for one who

worships a concept of his own devising.

He calls upon it in secret and aloud, yet it will not

answer him in his time of hardship.

For in its helplessness it is like him:

a created thing bearing the mark of its abasement.

He reveres it, while submitting to it,

admitting his inadequacy in relation to it.

And all this arises from him in

the form of a notion, like his expression of it.

He lacks faith in the unseen, whereby

defilement might vanish through its purification,

and he might know God, the Eternal, whom

nothing resembles in its changing forms.

    فاحذر من العقل وتزويره

    God is Truth, and all else is falsehood;

so beware of reason and its falsifications.

And remain steadfast in the revealed law and what has come of

its rulings; you will attain its illumination.

And understand from the Qur'an, restoring

what reason has laid waste, by rebuilding it.

And turn toward the unseen, and be trusting

in it, and fear His decree of destruction.

And be certain that all are powerless to comprehend Him,

and flee from reason and its confining limits.

I marvel at one who forgoes understanding the

Qur'an, paying no heed to its interpretation,

to know the Lord through it, while he does not

    forbid reason and its thinking.

You see him fear understanding a verse of the

Qur'an, lest it lead to his being declared an unbeliever,

yet he does not fear reason, through which he oversteps bounds,

as though it decreed that he be honored.

So understand God's Book, and judge by what

it contains concerning the lowliest and his date-stone's thin skin.

And beseech your Lord, hoping in Him through

truly proclaiming His sole divinity and His greatness.

And if God shows you the excellence of a man

among the perfected of this world, and his refinement,

then trust him, and lean upon his words,

and devote yourself to repeating his habitual invocation.

And breathe the garden's fragrance from his breath,

and live by it, content with its fragrance.
