Indeed, some people did not see

my state when they journeyed by night,

and they have worn my bones away.

Would that I knew whether they knew

    what heart they had possessed.

What befell me has indeed befallen,

    after their departure, among humankind.

Ah, who is there for me? If only I could see,

and if only my heart could know

    which mountain pass they took.

I am an ardent lover, love-stricken,

and my patience is no more.

And they are the folk—the very ones.

Do you think they have come through safely,

or do you think they have perished?

    The narrator told of them

that they are on level ground.

Then, from the excess of love's anguish,

the masters of love grew bewildered

    in love, and plunged in.
