    ظلموك بل جهلوك يا كرواني

    They claimed your melodies never changed;

They wronged you—rather, they did not know you, my curlew.

Yesterday you let me hear what I had never

heard in the melodies of bygone days.

And yesterday you told me what you had never told

    of melody, eloquence, and meaning.

I complain of you, though I thank you, because it is

a secret you insist on keeping hidden.

I thank you, though I complain of you, because it is

a secret you save for the best moment.

A guarded treasure—so bring forth from its beads

riches for hearts and adornment for ears.

I do not see you; often the mind has been visited

by inspiration no pair of eyes has seen.

I am in your wing, where it vanishes into the dark,

though my body rests upon the earth.

I am in your tongue, where passion sets it free

in merriment, though joy has overcome my tongue.

I am in your inner self when it speaks out, so I see no

secret the conscience of my age conceals.

I am within you, in the little heart, matching

    spring's pulse with that heartbeat.

I am within you, in the eye that bestows sleep

and is sparing with awakenings and sorrows.

Fly in the darkness with a heart: if it shook hands with

a stone of the lowlands, that stone would resolve to fly.

You are spared the need for the wing's feathers and its resolve

by the joys of one with passion unbound, enraptured.

Yesterday you taught me your entire secret:

the secret of happiness in this fleeting existence.

    فيكم تُؤلَّف نافر الأوزان

    The secret of happiness is aversion and love;

in you, discordant meters are harmonized.

You are at the very heart of the universe's order,

yet within it you seem an outcast offender.

You are equals, like friends, yet between you

lies a distance like that between two adversaries.

The flying one does not bear the captive's burden

as Adam's son bears his brothers' stumbling.

There is no scholar among you, nor any learner,

    no—nor a forerunner or a laggard.

Alike in life, for each of you is

a traveler through darkness, calling out songs.

Scattered where you dwell, yet your custom

at departure is the gathering of the dwellers.

And it is as though a copy were made for each

    of these skies and homelands.

So each is a partner in a single share,

and yet is alone, with no second beside him.

From nature's store you are given wisdom,

not from racing and wagering among yourselves.

You sons of birds that sing praises in the darkness,

within you is the divination of a righteous seer.

You sold the sleeper's slumber and the sweetness of his rest,

and with it bought the wakeful one's alertness.

Speak whenever you wish to speak, my curlew,

    in a chatterer's playfulness and a sober one's composure.

I shall live like you, for myself and for the world at once,

and speak like you of how the two unite.

And I shall go on with life thronging in my heart

forever, while the crowd shuns my place.

You have indeed been changed—though a poet is not changed

in his style of expression by twenty years—

by the joys of a world whose purity nothing clouds

with falsehood save the hidden thoughts of humankind.

In solitude, my beloved and I are sought out

by the world of beauty, while we two are alone.
