The weeping poet lamented the blindness that had struck him.
The weeping poet complained of blindness that had afflicted him,
And blindness is darkest when it strikes a poet's eyelid.
And nothing is darker than when blindness strikes the eyes of a poet,

He wails with an eye where decay has left nothing
Who laments with an eye that destruction had left
But a sunken spring of sorrow, its waters spent.
Nothing but a source of deep, hidden sorrow,

فيطرق إغضاءً بمقلة حاسر
And the sun's eye looks askance at his brow,
And the sun's eye glances at the sparks on his forehead,
So he bows his head, casting down his weary eye.
So he closes his eyelids in sadness,

And did the faces of the shining stars rise there?
And did the bright faces rise in it?

On graceful women, or have pebbles become like jewels?
On the neck, or did the pebbles remain like gems?

The sigh from his breast almost cleaves the horizon
His chest almost splits with his sighs
When he begins to reproach it with a bewildered man's cry:
When he tries to appease it with a bewildered cry,

You lavish radiance on the wolf's eye, O horizon,
Your horizon is generous to the eyes of the wolf, O horizon, with teeth
To guide it in its slaughter of wild calves.
To guide it in its slaughter of the butcher,

And spill it over the desolate plains,
And spill it over the flooding marshes,

For whom do the worlds grow fair, if an eye cannot see
For whom do the universes adorn themselves if the one who does not see
Their wonders—an eye that sees all that dazzles?
Cannot perceive their wonders?

And fortune's bounty there was for my eye alone.
And fate was kind in it only to onlookers,

And would I have feared death except that it
It would hide from me the beauty of those sights?
Will conceal that beautiful sight from me?

أميناً ولا ريب المنون بزائري
So here I am: life's toil does not leave me
So here I am, with no effort left in life to emigrate from it,
Safe, nor does the calamity of death visit me.
And no doubt, death will visit me,

I have gathered the misery of life in the darkness of decay,
So alas for me, a dead man with tormented thoughts!
Oh, the agony of a wretched man!

I see the morning aroused with the eyelid of a sleeper,
And my heart beholds it with a wakeful man's sorrow.
And my heart watches it with sad wakefulness,

I could see him before the dust blinded my sights?

So O heart spend your light and be content
From the sun: the brilliance of fresh, radiant faces.
Before the sun with the splendor of bright faces.
