O my books, I complain, but do not grow angry.

You are not one who listens or reproaches.

O my books, you have bequeathed me sorrow.

Never! It is not forgotten, nor does it fade.

O my books, you have clothed my skin in wasting sickness.

Your gilded skin has done me no good.

How many black nights I have spent,

    Sleepless until the star withdrew.

As though I glimpse beneath the darkness

The skulls of the dead, appearing and declaiming.

And each person is either sunk in slumber,

Or sunk in his cup, drinking,

Or a lover whose beloved has come to him,

And so he has gained from his world what he desires,

Or a heedless man dreaming in his night

Of his bygone day and what will follow.

    وأنت لا جدوى ولا مأرب

    A person benefits from what he acquires;

But you offer neither benefit nor purpose,

    Except tales, and except hopes,

And experience whose possessor is weary.

May the All-Merciful have no mercy, among the departed,

On the one who taught the world to write.

    فكيف بي لما دنا المغرب

    I complained of them when life was at its dawn;

Then what of me when sunset drew near?

When sunset drew near, I made peace with them,

Those that prompt complaint, but not anger,

Those to which I once said,

With my heart bleeding and my innards aflame:

O my books, you have bequeathed me sorrow.

Never! It is not forgotten, nor does it fade.

O my books, you have clothed my skin in wasting sickness.

Your gilded skin has done me no good.

So now, O my books, come to one

For whom the foulest thing is good.

You are no worse than the torment of hopes,

And it is they that lie even in their truth.

You are no harsher than the misery of love,

And it is love that brings weariness even in its play.

You are no dearer in price, even if it rises,

Than jewels that are hoarded or ruined.

You are not, in intoxication and in pleasure,

Emptier than the poison that is drunk.

Woe to you! We are indeed of a people

Among whom the turn comes sooner or later.

Tomorrow we shall all be left with nothing

In life but your dusty shelf.

If only, when I am beneath the earth, I might have

    A chattering skull to address

A band of readers who accept me

As I accept the trial you bring when I grow angry.

O my books, reckon whatever you wish,

Or let my readers reckon whatever they wish.
