O gibbon, may you be well and at peace,

O father of the genius and the acrobat!

How can your sons accept for you a dwelling

    So degrading, in the zoo?

    ترقَ في (سلم الرقي) وتعلُ

    Play now, and afterward wait a long while;

You will climb the ladder of progress and rise.

How is it you have not leapt up the ladders,

    O climber who never tires?

O doyen of the arts, be patient and take your time,

And be content with your share of cheers and acclaim:

Welcome, welcome, and a hearty welcome!

And gifts ranging from seed kernels to broad beans.

    Wait, friend; little by little,

You will cook all your food with your own hands.

Yet I think that what was raw

Of it is better for you in both states.

    Wait, friend, a million years,

Or millions—by God, I do not know.

If, after that, you draw near to my station,

Then the journey's ultimate outcome is that you do not know.

    سوف تتلو نثرًا وتنظم شعرًا

    And persevere if prose and verse concern you;

You will recite prose and compose poetry.

And tomorrow imagination will leap and soar,

While your two arms cannot manage a leap.

And you will see the beauty of faces

In mirrors, after the long wandering.

Its charms will grow sweet in your eyes,

So prepare yourself for embracing and kissing.

And when you study the rhythms of dance

After toil—for dancing is innate in you—

Will you attain perfection after imperfection,

If a thought, not an arm, bears you aloft?

The cage you are in is far more spacious

Than the expanse where we dwell as captives.

We have lost our way there, and guidance is far off,

And the stars of the sky are bewildered there.

Wait: you will understand a thing through a name,

After an image, and the past after the present.

Then, if you seek the inner essence of understanding,

My friend, what an impossibility you have sought!

Where were you yesterday, on the day we began

And met Adam along the way?

We have arrived; where will you arrive—where—

When you follow behind us, my friend?

    أنت طفل الزمان والطفل غِرٌّ

    Amuse yourself, play, and laugh at us as you please;

You are time's child, and a child is naive.

You will weep in sorrow and laugh in sorrow

When an age passes and another age arrives.
