    O gibbon, do not discredit

    my praises and my thanks.

From this day on, you are associated

with my criticism and my verse.

    If you do not dance

well, who can make my excuse convincing?

If you fall short, they will say:

"A poet who falsely lavishes praise!

What has this al-Aqqad to do with monkeying,

    when praise is so tempting?

    Indeed, he babbles in praise,

    but does not know."

So fill the cages, O gibbon,

    with leaps—what leaps!

And say: "Al-Aqqad does not err

    in assessing worth."
