يا خلق ما أرواحكم سمحةٌ

يا خلق ما أرواحكم سمحةٌ

عندي ولا إن سمحت كافيةْ

عندي ولا إن سمحت كافيةْ

O creatures, your souls are not freely given

O people, your souls were so generous

to me, nor, even if freely given, sufficient.

Yet never enough when given to me

أعطيتمُ إبليس أضعافها

أعطيتمُ إبليس أضعافها

من حَيوَاتٍ عندكم غاليةْ

من حَيوَاتٍ عندكم غاليةْ

You gave Iblis many times their number

You gave the devil his due and more

in lives precious in your eyes.

Of your precious souls willingly

وبعتمُ في سوقه كل ما

وبعتمُ في سوقه كل ما

وهبتكم من عيشة راضيةْ

وهبتكم من عيشة راضيةْ

And in his market you sold all that

And you sold in his market all that

I bestowed on you of a life of contentment.

I granted you of contentment and glee

لم تشتروا السلم بأرواحكم

لم تشتروا السلم بأرواحكم

بل اشتريتم نقمة ثانيةْ

بل اشتريتم نقمة ثانيةْ

You did not buy peace with your souls;

You did not buy peace with your souls

rather, you bought a second punishment.

But bought more torment and agony

عطاؤكم إبليس سمحٌ بلا

عطاؤكم إبليس سمحٌ بلا

أجر ولا أمنية خافيةْ

أجر ولا أمنية خافيةْ

Your giving to Iblis is generous, without

Your gift to the devil was free and kind

reward or any hidden wish.

Without reward or hidden wish

وما بذلتم قط لي قُربةً

وما بذلتم قط لي قُربةً

إلا رجاء العفو والعافيةْ

إلا رجاء العفو والعافيةْ

And never did you offer me an act of devotion

And never a gift to me you gave

except in hope of pardon and well-being.

Except hoping for pardon and bliss
