May God reward the shop of fetters, for it is

the focus of hopes, from far and near.

People have drawn provisions from it in every age,

and made pilgrimage to it, procession after procession.

They shout there at the smiths as though they were

wolves in a barren valley on earth.

So one says, “Hurry with my fetter, for I am

free!” And another, a captive, constantly tosses and turns.

When he fails to find shackles, he frowns,

dejected; yet if they weigh him down, he does not frown.

They circle the shackled man as an unadorned

    pauper would, admiring embroidered cloaks.

So this one looks toward a fetter of reason,

and reason comes only from a tightly knotted tether.

It brings low every rising desire of his,

and overcomes every mighty hope of his.

And he walks, proud of the shackles of experience,

despite his envy of those untouched by experience.

And another gazes toward a fetter of love,

and in love lies the fetter of the gatherer poised to spring.

He calls, “Grant me the fetter, O you who fashion it,

for in the fetter lies my escape from freedom’s prison.

Wind it around my heart, my mind, and my lifeblood,

and encircle with it my hand, my neck, and my shoulder.

And stud it with distinguished beauty, and polish it

with all that is joyous and pleasing to behold.

It is hard for us to live free, when around us

are captives of passion, both fulfilled and disappointed.”

And many a carefree man, whose good fortune is complete,

fetters his world to the far-ranging Anqa bird:

wishes he pursues, which bind his steps

as night’s darkness binds the step of one who strays.

And another, worn out by boredom, stretches

his hands toward work with no purpose in view.

Whenever he sees the toil-worn man loathing his life,

he wishes the days would grant him a weary man’s hardship.

And how many aspire to status—and status is a safeguard,

yet it is like a stronghold overgrown with thickets.

It keeps foes away from its master, and keeps him

away from people, like one who hangs back, watchful.

And many a barren man, whose barrenness has broken his fetter,

yearns for the fetter that weighs heavily on a father.

When the world vaunts its favor to him, he answers it

with a bereft man’s curse and a destitute man’s wail.

He sees that the state of one ransomed from his captivity

is, in its eyes, like that of one loathed and shunned.

And one whom life has not bound with its fetter—

what a wretched form of closeness it has chosen for him!

Children of Adam, do not disown them, for they are

brands of your souls that have not been hidden.

For you hate the fetter only because

you strain beneath its heavy, many-branched burden.

The mightiest of you is he whose load admits no increase,

and whose shackles leave no room for one who comes after.

And they have claimed that the rein is guidance

for one who walks through the unknown reaches of deep darkness.
