أحمّل هذا الدهر ذم صنيعه

أحمّل هذا الدهر ذم صنيعه

كما يحمل العبد السياط ليُضربا

كما يحمل العبد السياط ليُضربا

I make this age bear the blame for its deeds,

I blame this age for its deeds

Just as a slave carries the whips so that he may be beaten.

As a slave carries the whips to be struck

ويشبه عبد السوء في كل فعله

ويشبه عبد السوء في كل فعله

فيضرب أحياناً وما زال مذنبا

فيضرب أحياناً وما زال مذنبا

And it resembles a wicked slave in all it does:

And a bad slave is alike in his every act

So it is beaten at times, yet remains guilty.

So he is whipped at times though still guilty
