He resolves, yet his plumage has no resolve.

Lies face down; the sandgrouse has called, while he is mute.

    Ribs splintering in their graves.

And the burden of his wings weighs him down, after

They bore him aloft, a raptor plunging headlong.

Two wings—were they to fly, up would rise and wheel

The pinnacles of Radwa, and Yalamlam would take flight.

And he gazes at the reaches of the sky, as though he were

An accursed outcast, regretting his days in the heavens.

And sometimes he closes his eyes—has he seen death

Swooping down upon him, or is he dreaming of his past?

He imagines it his prey, and himself an eaglet.

Your eyes, O elder of birds, inspire awe,

From which the lesser birds flee and are routed.

They are not powerless against you this morning; rather,

Every youth has its majesty when it grows old.
