    O you who lament an affliction that has engulfed your soul,

    Be gentle with yourself; every day has its star.

    اني لأجلد للهموم واصلب

    Lay on my heart what is too heavy for you to bear;

    I am more resilient in sorrow, and stronger.

    عجباً وحقك من نعيم ينحب

    You are bliss to my eyes and my mind;

    How strange, by your worth, that bliss should sob!

    They complain of the world, yet without them

    The world would be neither loved nor desired.

    If you weep, you are not the first shining light

    To brighten eyes though deepest darkness has engulfed it.

    You would have attained what you seek and desire,

    Had the days an eye to keep watch.

    Let despair never carry you away, for perhaps

    Morning will return while you are carefree and rejoicing.

    The tears of youth—may you never be denied their fruits—

    Water the tender mind, and it grows fertile.
