صوتاًa voice يرفرفflutters فيin الهزيعthe watch of night الثانيthe second
Do they hear, save for the curlew's echo,
Do they hear naught but the caravan's echo
A voice fluttering in the second watch of night,
A voice fluttering in the second dusk
منfrom كلِّevery سارٍa night-traveler فيin الظلامthe darkness كأنَّهas though he were
بعضُa part of الظلامthe darkness تُضلُّهlose sight of him العينانِboth eyes
From any night-roamer in the dark, as though he were
Of everyone walking in the dark as though
A part of darkness, eluding both eyes?
He's part of the dark, led astray by both eyes

He calls when night closes over him
Calling out when the night wraps him up
In waves of darkness, with a drowning man's cry.
The wave of pitch darkness calls out like one drowning

What harm is it to one who sings as he does
No harm in one who sang like his singing
That he does not strike with the force of eagles?
That he doesn't strike with the talons of hawks

Indeed, life's merits are many;
Indeed, the virtues in life are many
Fear and force stand equal within it.
Fear in it and ease are equal

O reviver of the pitch-black night through vigil,
O reviver of the ignorant night wakefully
While the birds take shelter in their nests,
While the birds take refuge in nests

منthan نابغa genius فيin غمرةthe depths of النسيانoblivion
Who sings the stars onward, yet remains more hidden
He chats with the planets while he is more hidden
Than a genius in the depths of oblivion,
Than an eminent poet in the depths of oblivion
قلْspeak ياO شبيهَcounterpart of النابغينthe geniuses إذاwhen دُعواthey are called
والجهلwhile ignorance يضربsettles down حولهمaround them بجرانwith its neck lowered
Speak, O counterpart of geniuses when they are called,
Say, O kin of eminent poets, when called
While ignorance settles round them, its neck to the ground:
And ignorance strikes around them with poles

How many a cry of yours in darkness seems like
How many a scream for you in the dark as though
The beating of a breast tender toward the gloom!
Beating a chest for the oppressed soul

These are languages; there are no languages but those
These are the languages, and no languages but those
Through which the voice of feeling is raised.
Raised by them, a string of conscience

If letters have not bound them, then they
If letters don't restrict them, then they
Speak like revelation in every tongue.
Speak like revelation in every tongue

بثthe outpouring of الحزينthe sorrowful one وفرحةand the joy of الجذلانthe jubilant one
The speech least in need of syllables and tongues
The speech is richest without divisions and foreignness
Is the sad one's outpouring and the glad one's joy.
Sad pouring out and joy of bud
