رب ما بالنا نغص بأحلى

ما شربنا وفيمَ يا رب يحلو

O Lord, why do we choke on the sweetest

of what we have drunk? And to what end, O Lord, is it sweet?

رب والعيش فيه حلو ومرٌّ

رب والعيش فيه حلو ومرٌّ

لم لا يمحضان والأمر سهل

لم لا يمحضان والأمر سهل

O Lord, while life holds sweetness and bitterness,

why are they not kept unmixed, when the matter is simple?

لِمَ لا يصفوان فالشهد شهد

لِمَ لا يصفوان فالشهد شهد

حين يعطي العباد والخل خل

حين يعطي العباد والخل خل

Why are they not pure, so honey is honey

when He gives it to humankind, and vinegar is vinegar?

إن خلًّا يشوب شهدًا ضلال

إن خلًّا يشوب شهدًا ضلال

ولشهد يشوب خلا أضل

ولشهد يشوب خلا أضل

Indeed, vinegar that taints honey is error,

and honey that taints vinegar is surely a greater error.
