ألا لا تعّدّنّ اليراعة آلةً
تسوقbrings لكto you الرزقthe livelihood الذيthat بتَّyou spent the night راجياhoping for
تسوق لك الرزق الذي بتَّ راجيا
Take heed: never regard the reed pen as a tool
Do not count farming as a machine
That brings you the livelihood you spent the night hoping for.
That brings you the sustenance you await
يراعreed pen الفتىthe young man عودa stick تعرّىwas stripped away لحاؤهits bark
يراع الفتى عود تعرّى لحاؤه
ولاand not يثمرbear fruit العودthe stick الذيthat عادhas become عارياbare
ولا يثمر العود الذي عاد عاريا
A young man's reed pen is a stick stripped of its bark,
The young man tends a stick stripped of its bark
And a stick that has become bare bears no fruit.
And the naked stick bears no fruit
