And an army of many voices, united in its advance,
The ranks advancing to the clash of arms,
devouring the wilderness, massive in its battalions and tightly arrayed.
Before the bombs the horsemen turn and wheel.

When the keen swords flash within it, you would take them for
When bright blades flash among them, these blades
lightning appearing in rainless clouds and hiding again.
Seem lightning in the battle, swift, concealed.

As though the tips of its standards, in its surging advance, were
Like flocks of waves the standards flow and surge
great seagoing ships, unable to speed onward.
As ships the seas disable and make keel.

And if its flanks rise high, its pivot is
And though its posts and pillars challenge heaven,
the wisdom of a king, valiant in character and chaste,
Its sovereign is Muhammad, guide and seal.

So, on a Tuesday dawning, they awoke
When kings describe him, he surpasses description.
To ride against the hypocrites in zeal.

Because of him, on Tuesday, early in the morning,
The valley of Sali't echoed with their wails
when dawn had undone most of the curtains' fastenings,
Of men and boys who played a parlous reel.

the two mountains of Wadi Salit wept and wailed
Their fevered cries called up those men to arms
for the band of slaves and the uncircumcised company.
As calls collect the locusts in their peel.

Doom's crier summoned them, and they gathered at his call,
To fright th'emir with war's mad din and clamour
as dung beetles gather to dry dung.
And gleaming blades the dust storms disconseal.

They sought, in their ignorance, to terrify the emir,
He spun and shot them down with some small band:
by rousing the dogs of war in the heart of the tempest.
They fled defeated, broken from the steel.

He did no more than hurl a few of these against them,
As sparks fly upward from the welding blaze,
and they turned back on their gaunt heels, shieldless.
So fled they, fallen to his lead and wheel.

The dragons of the fray breathed out their fire
great birds of prey veering toward cranes on dry ground.

toward the mountain, packed with rank upon rank.

Ibn Balush says to Musa, as he draws near:
A thousand dead, a thousand more lie slain,
“I see death before me, beneath me, and behind me.”
And thousand upon thousand without count.

We killed them: a thousand, a thousand, and as many again,
Save those the hollows hid from sight
and a thousand, and a thousand, after a thousand, added to a thousand,
Or swallowed in the ridges they would mount.

on the morning we returned from their gaunt vultures.
