Who will tell the peoples that Muhammad,

the Messenger of God, is rightly guided wherever he turns?

He called upon his Lord and sought help from God alone,

so by morning He had kept faith with him and bestowed His favor.

We traveled by night and arranged to meet Muhammad at Qudayd,

as he led us toward a purpose firmly ordained by God.

They doubted us at dawn, until they discerned

young men in the dawn, and a forest of upright spears.

On horseback, our coats of mail strapped upon us,

and foot soldiers, a vast host like a torrent's surge.

For the chieftains of the tribe, if you ask,

are Sulaym, and among them are some of their own who embraced Islam.

    أَطاعوا فَما يَعصونَهُ ما تَكَلَّما

    And a force of the Ansar who do not forsake him;

they obeyed and never defied him whenever he spoke.

So if you have appointed Khalid commander among the people,

and put him in the lead, then he has indeed advanced,

with a force God has guided, whose commander you are,

you strike with it, in the cause of right, whoever has been most unjust.

I swore a sincere oath to Muhammad,

so I fulfilled it with a thousand bridled horses.

And the Prophet of the believers said, “Advance!”

And it was dear to us to be foremost.

And we spent the night by the pool of al-Mustadir; there was

no fear in us, only eagerness and firm resolve.

We obeyed you until all the people embraced Islam,

and until we raided at dawn the host, the people of Yalamlam.

The piebald, rose-red stallion loses its way in its midst,

and the elder does not rest easy until he is marked.

We advanced upon them like sandgrouse rushing to water, driven on at midmorning,

and each one we saw had drawn back from his brother.

From early morning until, at evening, we left

Hunayn, its tear-ducts already streaming blood.

If you wished, on every side you could see a swift mare,

and her rider falling, and a shattered spear.

And Hawazin had secured their people against us,

and they were pleased that we should fail and be deprived.

We struck Quraysh, their lean and their fat,

and he took careful heed, with concern, then spoke.

So whatever came of it was a matter I witnessed,

and I helped in it by doing what was most prudent.

And one day, toward Musa, our steeds encountered

tribes of Nasr and the clan of Ibn Aslam.

Nothing settled the blood-debts but our swords,

and spears with which we draw forth blood.
