Put aside your repeated talk of error; we suffice

To lock horns with the ram of battle, today and yesterday.

For Khalid has more right than you to plead an excuse,

The morning he took a clear path in the matter,

Aided by God's command, driving toward you

Rightward-crossing steeds that never stumble for him, and leftward-crossing ones.

They announced Malik's death on the plain when the steeds descended upon it,

    Frowning amid rising dust, grim-faced.

So if we have bereaved you, Salma, then Malik—

You left women wailing over him, and a man as well.
