Marked steeds were present beside the Prophet
They witnessed with the Prophet pitched battles,
at Hunayn, their hoof-edges bleeding.
At Hunayn while the cisterns were bloody,
وَوَقعَةَand the battle of خالِدٍKhalid شَهِدَتthey witnessed وَحَكَّتand scraped

They witnessed Khalid’s battle too, and scraped
And the raid of Khalid which they witnessed and related,
their hoof-tips against the sacred land.
Its disasters upon the sacred town.
نُعَرِّضُwe expose لِلسُيوفِto the swords بِكُلِّat every ثَغرٍfrontier
خُدوداًcheeks ماnot تُعَرَّضُare exposed لِلِّطامِto slaps
At every frontier we expose to swords
We expose our cheeks to the swords at every raid,
cheeks never offered to slaps.
Cheeks not exposed to being crushed.
وَلَستُand I am not بِخالِعٍone who casts off عَنّيfrom me ثِيابيmy garments
إِذاwhen هَرَّsnarl الكُماةُthe armored warriors وَلاnor أُراميI exchange arrow-shots
And I do not cast off my garments
And I am not one to take off my clothes,
when armored warriors snarl, nor do I trade arrows.
When the valiant flee, and I do not shoot arrows.
وَلَكِنّيbut I يَجولُwheels about المُهرُthe colt تَحتيbeneath me
إِلىtoward الغاراتِthe raids بِالعَضبِwith the keen sword الحُسامِthe cleaving blade
Instead, the colt wheels beneath me
Rather my swift horse wanders beneath me
toward the raids, with a keen, cleaving sword.
To raids with the sharp sword.
