Listen, you two: tell Ibn Jidhl from me:

Then how did we pursue you in vengeance for Kurz and Malik,

on the morning we bereaved you of Hisn and his son,

and of Asim, son of al-Mu‘alla, and al-Mu‘arik?

Eight of them we slew in vengeance for him,

all together—yet they were no equal requital for Malik.

We make you taste—while death builds a pavilion

over you—the keen edges of cleaving swords.

They flash in our hands as lightning flashed,

glittering in the darkness of pitch-black night.

At forenoon we attacked you with lean, noble steeds,

racing with us like fiercely sweeping winds.

Whenever they emerge from one dust cloud after another,

they surge toward a thorny tangle of death.
