أَبلِغinform سَراةَthe nobles of بَنيthe sons of شِهابٍShihab كُلَّهاall of them
أَبلِغ سَراةَ بَني شِهابٍ كُلَّها
وَذَويand possessors of المَثالَةِdistinction مِنamong بَنيthe sons of عَتّابِAttab
وَذَوي المَثالَةِ مِن بَني عَتّابِ
Inform all the nobles of Banu Shihab,
and the men of distinction among Banu Attab:
كَثُرَhas grown الضَجاجُthe clamor وَماand not مُنيتُI was afflicted بِغادِرٍwith a traitor
كَثُرَ الضَجاجُ وَما مُنيتُ بِغادِرٍ
كَعُتَيبَةَlike Utaybah بنِson of الحارِثِal-Harith بنِson of شِهابِShihab
كَعُتَيبَةَ بنِ الحارِثِ بنِ شِهابِ
The clamor has grown, yet I have never been afflicted by a traitor
like Utaybah son of al-Harith son of Shihab.
جَلَّلتَyou cloaked حَنظَلَةَHanzalah المَخانَةَtreachery وَالخَناand obscenity
جَلَّلتَ حَنظَلَةَ المَخانَةَ وَالخَنا
وَدَنِستَand you became sullied آخِرَthe last of هَذِهِthese الأَحقابِages
وَدَنِستَ آخِرَ هَذِهِ الأَحقابِ
You have cloaked Hanzalah in treachery and obscenity,
and you became sullied in the last of these ages.
وَأَسَرتُمُand you captured أَنَساًAnas فَماso what حاوَلتُمُyou sought
وَأَسَرتُمُ أَنَساً فَما حاوَلتُمُ
بِإِسارٍby capturing جارِكُمُyour neighbor بَنيsons of الميقابِal-Miqab (the fool)
بِإِسارٍ جارِكُمُ بَني الميقابِ
And you captured Anas—what did you seek
by capturing your neighbor, you sons of al-Miqab, the fool?
فِخّواsnort بِأَطرافِthrough the tips of الأُنوفِthe noses وَأَمهِلواand give respite
فِخّوا بِأَطرافِ الأُنوفِ وَأَمهِلوا
عَنكُمfrom yourselves قَوادِمَthe vanguard of صِرمَةِa band of الأَعرابِthe Bedouins
عَنكُم قَوادِمَ صِرمَةِ الأَعرابِ
Snort through the tips of your noses, and give respite
from yourselves to the vanguard of the Bedouin band.
بِاِستِup the arse of الَّتيher who وَلَدَتكَbore you وَاِستِand the arse of مَعاشِرٍgroups of people
بِاِستِ الَّتي وَلَدَتكَ وَاِستِ مَعاشِرٍ
تَرَكوكَthey left you تَمَرِسُهُمyou wear them down مِنَof الأَحسابِancestral honor
تَرَكوكَ تَمَرِسُهُم مِنَ الأَحسابِ
Up the arse of her who bore you, and the arse of folk
who let you wear away their ancestral honor.
