لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed حَكَّتground down رَحىthe millstone of الحَربِwar بَعدَماafter
أَطارَتsent flying لُؤَيّاًLuʾayy قَبلُpreviously شَرقاًeastward وَمَغرِباand westward
By my life, war's millstone has indeed ground down—after
By my life, the millstone of war has ground
it had earlier sent Luʾayy flying east and west—
After it flew high, east and west,
بَقِيَّةَthe remnant of آلِthe house of الكاهِنَينِthe two priests وَعِزَّهاand its might
فَعادَso it became ذَليلاًabased بَعدَماafter كانَit had been أَغلَباmighty
the remnant of the two priests' house and its might;
The remnant of the priestly house and its glory
so it became abased after once being mighty.
So it returned humiliated after it had been victorious
فَطاحَso fell سَلامٌSalām وَاِبنُand the son of سَعيَةَSaʿya عَنوَةًby force
وَقيدَand was led ذَليلاًabased لِلمَناياto doom اِبنُthe son of أَخطَباAkhṭab
So Salām and Ibn Saʿya fell by force,
Thus fell Salam and Ibn Saiyah by force
and Ibn Akhṭab was led, abased, to his doom.
And the son of Akhtab was bound a captive to death
وَأَجلَبَand he mustered forces يَبغيseeking العِزَّhonor وَالذُلَّand humiliation يَبتَغيhe seeks
خِلافَcontrary to يَدَيهِhis two hands ماwhat جَنىhe reaped حينَwhen أَجلَباhe mustered forces
And he mustered forces seeking honor, yet sought humiliation;
He who sought glory, now seeks humiliation
what he reaped when he rallied ran counter to his own hands' work.
Unlike his former gains when he attacked
كَتارِكِlike one abandoning سَهلِthe level ground of الأَرضِthe earth وَالحَزنُand rugged ground هَمُّهُhis concern
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas ذاthis فيamong الناسِpeople أَكدىless fruitful وَأَصعَباand harder
Like one who leaves the level ground, intent on the rugged,
Like one who leaves the easy ground and grieves
and this, among men, was less fruitful and harder.
Though once among men he was fiercest and hardest
وَشَأسٌand Shaʾs وَعَزّالٌand ʿAzzāl وَقَدand indeed صَلِياboth were scorched بِهاby it
وَماand not غُيِّباwere both kept away عَنfrom ذاكَthat فيمَنamong those who تَغَيَّباstayed away
And Shaʾs and ʿAzzāl were indeed both scorched by it,
Both Shammas and Azzal did pray with them
nor were they kept from that among those who stayed away.
And were absent from that place with the absent ones
وَعَوفُand ʿAwf بنُson of سَلمىSalmā وَاِبنُand the son of عَوفٍʿAwf كِلاهُماboth of them
وَكَعبٌand Kaʿb رَئيسُthe chief of القَومِthe people حانَmet his doom وَخُيِّباand was thwarted
And ʿAwf ibn Salmā and Ibn ʿAwf, both of them,
And Awf the son of Salma and the son of Awf alike
and Kaʿb, the people's chief, met his doom and was thwarted.
And Kaab the chief of the people, fortune failed them
فَبُعداًso banishment وَسُحقاًand utter banishment لِلنَضيرِfor al-Naḍīr وَمِثلُهاand its like
إِنif أَعقَبَfollows فَتحٌa conquest أَوor إِنِif اللَهُGod أَعقَباcauses one to follow
So away with al-Naḍīr, utterly away—and with its like,
So ruin and crushing on the Nadhir and the like of them
if a conquest follows, or if God brings one to follow.
If a conquest follows or if Allah brings conquest
