وَكانَتand it was نِهاباplunder تَلافَيتُهاI recovered it
وَكانَت نِهابا تَلافَيتُها
بِكَرّيby my charge عَلىon المُهرِthe colt فيin الأَجرَعِthe sandy plain
بِكَرّي عَلى المُهرِ في الأَجرَعِ
And it was plunder I had recovered,
The raids I made were repaid in kind,
By my charge on the colt across the sandy plain,
On my mare at night in Al-Ajra'a.
وَإيقاظِيَand my rousing القَومَthe men أَنlest يَرقدواthey sleep
وَإيقاظِيَ القَومَ أَن يَرقدوا
إِذاwhen هَجَعَslept الناسُthe people لَمnot أَهجَعِI sleep
إِذا هَجَعَ الناسُ لَم أَهجَعِ
And by rousing the men lest they sleep;
And my waking the tribe when they slept;
When the people slept, I did not sleep.
When people slept I did not sleep.
فَأَصبَحَso it became نَهبيmy spoils وَنَهبُand the spoils of العُبَيal-ʿUbay- (name fragment)
فَأَصبَحَ نَهبي وَنَهبُ العُبَي
دِ-d (completes al-ʿUbayd) بَينَbetween عُيَينَةَʿUyaynah وَالأَقرَعِand al-Aqraʿ
دِ بَينَ عُيَينَةَ وَالأَقرَعِ
So my spoils and al-ʿUbayd’s spoils ended up
So my raid and the raid of Al-'Ubayd
Between ʿUyaynah and al-Aqraʿ.
Were between 'Uyaynah and Al-Aqra'.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was فيin الحَربِbattle ذاpossessing تُدرَأُstrength to repel
وَقَد كُنتُ في الحَربِ ذا تُدرَأُ
فَلَمyet not أُعطَI was given شَيئاًanything وَلَمand not أُمنَعِI was denied
فَلَم أُعطَ شَيئاً وَلَم أُمنَعِ
And in battle I had been a staunch defender,
And I was a warrior of renown,
Yet I was given nothing, nor was I denied,
Yet I got no reward and met no refusal
إِلّاexcept أَفائِلَyoung camels أُعطيتُهاI was given them
إِلّا أَفائِلَ أُعطيتُها
عَديدَequal in number to قَوائِمِهاtheir legs الأَربَعِthe four
عَديدَ قَوائِمِها الأَربَعِ
Except for young camels I was given,
Except for the mares I was given
As many as their four legs.
With their four upright legs.
وَماand not كانَwas حِصنٌḤiṣn حابِسٌḤābis
وَما كانَ حِصنٌ حابِسٌ
يَفوقانِthey both surpass مِرداسَMirdās فيin مَجمَعِa gathering
يَفوقانِ مِرداسَ في مَجمَعِ
Nor did Ḥiṣn and Ḥābis
No fortress resisted
Surpass Mirdās in any gathering.
Like Mirdas in its enclosure.
وَماand not كُنتُI was دونَinferior to اِمرِىءٍa man مِنهُماof the two of them
وَما كُنتُ دونَ اِمرِىءٍ مِنهُما
وَمَنand whoever تَضَعِyou lower اليَومَtoday لاnot يُرفَعِhe is raised
وَمَن تَضَعِ اليَومَ لا يُرفَعِ
Nor was I inferior to either of them;
I was not inferior to any knight of theirs,
And whoever you lower today will not be raised.
He whom you disparage today will not be exalted.
